Morning Team ,
Just wondering if we can get a good thread going about reputable gunsmiths.
After a few fuckups and ridiculous prices with locals around Taupo / Taihape , I'm not too worried to send the rifle abroad for a bit of work/ drive halfway across the country to avoid mail order fuckarounds.
I've got a brand new Walter Lothar 8x57 Barrel to fit onto my Sako M995 , and as such need someone to fit the barrel.
Any pointers / Reccomendations / contacts?

Seems to be increasingly common. A Smith effectively cost my a T2 brake when they chamfered the rear of it to match a barrel I had threaded so it was timed. The instruction form had clear instruction not to do so and had it underlined. The brake was only there as I was having the rifle threaded and thought it would be useful to have the thread timed to the brake to keep options open. I mentioned it after but didn't push it at the time as it works still.
Issue is now I have another barrel thats 21mm at the muzzle and the T2 needs to be full-sized to work so I'm going to have to buy another...
I'll pm you which Smith as I'm sure they will come up in this thread.

Jaco goosen is a member on here, or a.j carr in kapiti is also very clever.
Cobus is great along with Mike Collings in Whakatane. Mike won the Ballinger belt this year and knows everything about rebarrelling.
Stuart at Greystone guns does great work. He’s very clear when you discuss options on the phone.

Seen a couple of rifles that Phil's built and they're pretty impressive. Does all the H and F work, and local police. Also builds his own suppressors
Had a great experience with Dean Maisey in Tauranga earlier this year, good communication and I thought his pricing was very reasonable.

That particular job is really restoration on a classic rifle.
Only used Colin at Gun Supplies Rotorua for one job so far, but his cut, crown and thread job was tidy and well done.

It will function yes but it radiused (which is stupid as it more work and looks ugly) not even a straight down to 16mm and will look ridiculous. On a 21 inch barrel. Was slightly annoyed and wish now I'd pushed the point. One benefit could have been I can get a bigger thread than the 9/16x24 but that just means I can't use my suppressor on the new Rifle. Oh well done now.Quote:

I’ve been fortunate to have a good run with the gunsmiths I’ve used, not that the work was particularly complicated:
-Dean Maisey; did a great job on a horrendously bad marlin rimfire trigger, as well as some other bits and pieces
-Gunworks; a bit of chopping, threading, and suppressing; good work
-DPT; not specialist gunsmiths but great at what they do (threading, suppressors etc.)

Jaco Goosen (he is on here) and Cobus Calitz (guntechnz)
I have only ever had fantastic service from Dean Maisey. Superb workmanship and excellent customer service.
Hugh Bradley made the Bradley 22's which were apparently very good. Not many gunsmiths are at that level.Quote:

Not really here to publicly mention them. They do good quality work just don't listen to instructions well. For your standard bolt fluting, barrel threading chambering work with nothing out of the ordinary they would be a good option. I just had a few non standard requests ie not tapering brake to barrel.Quote:

Just had a little job done buy Gunworks very happy with the work
Just a bit of a pain shipping it down there and back but they had the reamer required
They were very good to deal with and very Reasonable cost imo
Generally drop my guns into reloaders the gunsmith they use is extremely good at his job
