Does look interesting eh - I'm not big on semis or the 17hmr really, but it seems like a good bit of kit from the initial reviews.
Wonder if they'll make a 22LR version or just keep making the old Mod.64 as well.
I like it
I want one NOW. Only thing is cleaning will be a pain as you really need to scrub the copper out. Not easy with a pull through.
Anyone heard or seen one of these beasts in nz?
The importers have ordered them and most shops have ordered a few . Just waiting for them to arrive in NZ now .
I wonder how they'll be priced
I see the b.mag on tardme at 700, probably be similar?
We can only wait and hope.
Just checked the Savage website, US RRP for the A17 is $475 compared with $372 for the B-Mag so you're probably right!
Yeah I am picking $1000-1200. There will be the usual excuse about the now low NZ dollar etc.
I'm looking forward to hearing how they get on with a slightly shorter barrel and a can, fingers crossed it doesn't mess with the delayed blowback
They look good huh. I like the look of the stock and the larger bolt handle.
Well I guess that answers the price question...
Savage A17 17HMR auto (unsuppressed) | Trade Me
That's just a whisker more than a upper-spec 10/22 :0
Looks nice but could get expensive in semi
Pity, they were selling for 729 a week ago
These do look cool.
Delayed blowback like an H&K MP5.
Will have to keep them clean, mixed reports from the states accuracy wise. Will be expensive to run compared to a bolt gun due to ammo comsumption.
Look like a good trigger and nice bolt handle. Rotary magazine is a plus too.
Looks like they can be had for around $849.
Pretty sure hunting and fishing hamilton have one if anyone is interested
Yep, saw it last night
Had a play with an A17 yesterday, my first impressions are not very favorable unfortunately. A mate brought one out that was being reviewed and needed some game for a photo shoot.
It cycled perfectly, however only if you supported the rifle with your hand under the mag otherwise it would it would miss feed the 2nd round consistently as the rear of the mag would drop slightly. Bolt ejects the spent case, misses the rim of the round in the mag and catches the round half way up the side of case causing it to jam (seems common problem when googled).
A few other random observations,
Seemed very "plasticy" and "cheap".
Magazine was a pig to load compared to a 10/22.
Trigger was however better than a standard 10/22.
Mag was very easy to remove, maybe too easy.
Also managed cop a bit of crap in the face during firing, most likely unburnt powder, would pay to wear eye protection.
These are just my own opinions and experiances of the A17 that was on test. I knew next to nothing about them until yesterday so I was a bit shocked to see what they retail for.
Anyone used one and would recommend one ? theres a new scoped one for a reasonable price and was wondering if they were good or crap ? Savagearms A17 Semi Auto; .17HMR | Trade Me
I have suppressed probably 1/2 dozen so fare. Customers seems happy. Mechanism is reasonnably well finished and adjusted inside. Boydstock makes a laminated stock for it. It would improve from the plastic ones. Strong action with two action screws and a free floating barrel. A lot of good ingredients for good accuracy.but I have not shot one yet .
I bought one for my dad, had it cut and suppressed by gunworks. He's using it for rabbits and hares and loves it to bits. Found cutting /suppressing didn't adversely affect the function and made it a bit more user friendly. It took about 50/60 rounds and a couple of cleans to smooth off the rough edges and get it shooting like it should. Like all firearms, it has its quirks etc - the main thing we found was ensuring that the magazine is fully seated before you action it, or you will have no end of feeding issues and/or have the mag fall out. Found accuracy to be fine- 1-2 inch prone at 150m, depending on how much I take my time. Originally planned to use their special A17 ammo but have decided not to bother as normal ammo shoots fine. Really like the oversized cocking handle too
Thanks, How loud do you find it with the suppressor ? I ask as I had a Savage 17GLV a few years back and it was a ton quieter suppressed, but on the OTHER forum a guy talks about using savage A17 suppressed with a 22 mag dpt , A17 ammo, and reckons a "larger heaver suppressor" would quieten down the crack just a wee bit more" as he reckons its still quite a crack as its gruntier ammo.
Ive noticed in 2016 savage has now brought out laminated and laminated thumbhole versions and you can also get bull barrel versions as well, plus the guys who own savage also own Butler Creek and have a 25 round mag for it which would be handy. Just a pain in the ass that as a leftie the thumbhole version is of no use to me..grr.
As for the magazines, yes, with the savage mags you have to hold your tongue just right or they don't feed properly. I just ended up making a sort of latch that held the mag up firmly, before that it used to love love sitting about 2-3 mills too low so the bolt misses catching the bullet.
