    Question Scope choice

    Hi guys,

Fairly new to hunting, have been doing it for a few years now but not enough really for my liking. While hunting this past week my scope (cheap scope) decided it would fog up inside and make things interesting (thank god I had shot a deer earlier in the week).

I know there are a wide range of scopes on the market so I'll try narrow it down with what I need and see what you guys recommend.

    1- I have a 223 Bruno.
2- I tend to shoot within a range of 10-200m.
    3- Budget is $200-400.

    Cheers,
    Rusky.

Yeah, the VX1's take a real beating and just keep on coming back for more. I've had one on my goat rifle for 10 years now and it looks a little worse for wear, but still holds it zero just fine.

So for your ranges (10-200m) I'd go for a 2-7x32 Leupold VX1. This will give you 2 power for general hunting and if needed wind it up for a long shot.

My only complaint is that the numbers on the dial don't mean anything, i.e when sighting in, just turn the adjustments and hope it moves ''somewhere'' on the target - as it certainly wont move 0.25MOA or anything close to it...it's just random and totally does my head in...but once you've got it zeroed its just a case of ''set and forget'' and it will stay there.

Unlike VC I like the Weaver Classic, mine has taken some beatings and weather and been very reliable and the glass is nicer than a VX1. Anything in that price range will generally be reliable though there is always the chance of a dud. When I eventually upgrade from the 3-9 Nikko Nighteater on my 223 (which is actually bloody good for a $200 scope) I'm leaning towards a Vortex Diamondback 4-12, seem to get excellent reviews.

+1 on importing as well, easy and much cheaper than they usually are in shops here.

Cheers guys, leaning towards the VX1 at this stage.

Wirehunt, I hunt mainly deer, and it ranges from close range in the bush (10m) to open faces (200m).

Then go a fixed 3X, I had a great run out of a Tasco 6x40. It got all kinds of punishment and kept going, for what your doing I'd be looking for a 3x40 or maybe a 4x40.

The early fixed power Tascos are very reliable.

simple answer 3-9x40 vx1, I would urge you to get the lr duplex model to give you space to grow your skills within your scope

I got one years ago and have vx3s and 2s and burris this and that and most things inbetween but the trusty old vx1 has done far more miles and shot far mor animals and taken far more knocks.

places to buy include reloaders supplies auckland or richard wilhelms scopes and optics. or who ever is having a special. expect to pay roughly 370$ at a pretty good price. still one of my favorite scopes and one that holds its value, so dont bother going second hand just buy new for peace of mind

i can bet the scope will follow you to your next rifle too
