Scope for hmr for around $200

So I'm waiting for the new ruger hmr. Have decided to shorten the barrel and suppress it and now looking for a scope.
I'm thinking that the right scope would be one with mill dots for the different ranges this rifle is capable of. I'm not really looking at shooting any further than about 200m at all.

What do you think about that type of scope? I haven't had any scope other than a Bushnell cross hair type unit so not very knowledgable about what is best.

I see there are a few available on trademe for around the $200 mark which it's about what I want to spend. What are your thoughts?

A bargain is the Bushnell AR Optics 4.5-18 which go for $265 at Reloaders.
Surprisingly sharp optics, SF and a distance/drop reticle basically for .223 but you can probably adapt it to a HMR by dropping the power back a bit .

You can get a rimfire version of this in a lower power

I'm keen to hear what you reckon about the mill dot scope for the hmr, am I on the right track?
My theory is zero it in at 100 then I can work out what the next mark down serious at and apply that to the different distances. All I'm after is the ability to tag rabbits etc from a fair distance.

I don't muck around with dialing, sight it spot on at 100 metres and compensate, bit gimmicky for me pissing round, shit they never had that crap in my younger days and I don't miss much!:thumbsup:

Got a BSA on my 17 and it is fine. Not the dedicated 17 BDC version, but seems good enough for rimfire.

Burris-200236 Bur C4 3-9x40 - 1" Tube

I had a cheap Hawke Varmint Mildot scope on my 17HMR which was ok, it had turrets and mildot and an adjustable objective.
But I just didn't feel like it was that reliable, and the optics were OK at best. I replaced it with a Burris Fulfilled 2, which was a 100 times better clarity wise. But I wanted something which I could have accurate hold offs for windage. Even for under 300US in the US, you are pretty much stuck with either a good quality scope with only a BDC turret, or a OK quality scope, with all the bells and whistles, which I would struggle to rely on and they usually weigh a tonne.

The scope I linked is what I ended up buying, I had it at my door for around $280. From the little I have used it, it is exactly what I want, beautifully and clear glass, repeatable adjustments and small and lightweight.

I'd either go for one of these, or a Burris Fulfilled 2, or a Burris Timberline or really would have liked a mildot Nikon Buckmaster, bit they have stopped making those.
I wouldn't be that keen on going for a Tasco or Barska or NC star, purely on the basis they generally look like crap to look through, where as a Redfield or Burris would be a lot better in that department.

I have the APT on a 22lr and 243.

I had a BSA sweet 17 on my savage 17hmr (had as in sold the rifle).. was the bees knees. Since its made specifically for the ballistics of the 17hmr it made head shots on bunnies relatively easy at 250 yards and in no way do I consider myself a marksman of the caliber of some shooters on here.It was my first scope ever so people used to a leupy vx 6 might have a diff opinion.

Adjustable parallax from 10 yard to infinity.You switch tween the 17 grain and the 20 grain as well.

what I will say is it has issues focusing under 25 yards, and slightly blurry at 18 x magnification, then again I don't use it at more than 14-1 very often but still good for the $150 nz it cost me at the time. It can be somewhat of a pain shooting into the sun in the evening as well, the new models are apparently coated.

The latest ones also have side parallax adjustment and are supposed to be even clearer than mine.

i bought the sweet 17 6-18x40 and am very happy with it in relation to their cost. Zoomed over 14 or 15 and they aren't easy to see through but other than that i'm happy with it.
As for the dialling, seems to work well with my limited knowledge/skill. Hung a small frying pan on a fence at 270m and peppered it no trouble, my only challenge is working out what range targets are at.
