scope mount for rossi puma 357

hey everyone- I have an old probably circa late 80's Rossi puma 357 short barrel jobby.
I also have a small Armson OEG red dot that has lived on various other firearms over the years but probably is best suited to the Rossi mounted down on the barrel. Had it refurbished last year and the most appropriate rifle is the Rossi.
My Question is does anyone know of scope mounts that I could drill and tap to the barrel? It is too old for the factory to have D/T'd it already so have to do that so the worlds my oyster as to mounts but if two piece mixing and matching heights could be a PITA-there is quite a dramatic diameter change on the short barrel
Will the later model rails fit and just drill and tap the barrel to suit?
Not interested in a side mount so don't go there. I am even a little hesitant to fit the OEG but at worst I take it off and fill the screw holes.
    thoughts?
BTW the lower the better. and I can always remove metal from the mount later on If I have to streamline/lighten it.

Are you talking about a scout mount type thing?

I've got one that came off a Winchester 94, from memory it fitted into the rear sight dovetail and then was screwed into the top of the barrel band, which would have to by drilled/tapped. I have no idea if the distances are the same on a model 92. I suppose I could look. I have both.

I know the Rossi Rio Grande 30-30’s came with a detachable one piece mount, although that’s more of a 336 clone. Otherwise I’m sure there’s an 1892 mount available in the US.
How about just becoming proficient with the iron sights? I know they aren’t in vogue, but a short .357 is not the definition of a long range rifle. I can’t stand the sight of a scope on a lever gun, but that’s just me. Otherwise there’s a truck load of aftermarket aperture sight makers, XS, Williams, Skinner, Marbles, Lyman etc. I personally prefer standard iron sights for bush work, but a small aperture can make for a very definite point of aim at extended ranges.

fair call-Nothing wrong with the open sights per se', and I only expect it to be a 100ish yarder give or take.
I've had this rifle since about 93 and shot a couple of things with it. Had a couple of mates borrow it from time to time and used it in lever action shoots. with the short barrel and the big chunky sights it will put as many rounds as you like into a 4 inch group max. at 100m which is perfectly acceptable.
Have thought about a peep mounted right at the back of the action but by the time I buy that and fit it, it would be just as cheap to fit my OEG. Plus I have the OEG
Plus it isn't really a scope. it is approx. 6" long and you have to use both eyes open. 1" tube and quite good in low light. used it on a couple of 22's and a Mossberg 500 shotty years ago. great quick acquisition sight especially when light going a little. If you can see the animal the dots great.
    Look it up.
    <b>Armson O.E.G. 1"
Plus a few of the sights you mention don't always fit the old 92 with the sight as part of the barrel band so a little mucking around may have to be done.

Yep I put one on my .44 @csmiffy.
Mine was an older model but the new rail did fit it. Had to slightly modify it as I wanted it short so can still use a flip up rear sight.

Nothing is tough about having a 70 lb bow and looking like an uncoordinated praying mantis while trying to draw it back.

Boar freak, was yours d/t'd for the mount? agree about short-the OEG is only 5 inches long tops so it would only need something to space the rings out maybe 2 1/2 inches. Everything else could be carved back. Mine doesn't need batteries so as much as I/d like some good q/d mounts probably not needed. Mine doesn't have flip up rear, just the old school fixed with a ramp. (side story, had to take the ramp out to get it to shoot on centre, eventually lost ramp. get another one, oneday but wont have to with the OEG lol.
One guy on a us forum got a scope rail with the centre milled out. take the scope off and the open sights were useable. he also modified a rear peep and d/t's to the far rear of the action just behind the locking lugs.

No it wasn't drilled, got it done by gunsmith. The new ones are drilled under the sight ramp an that would put the rail far too forward for my liking. For the rear sight I used one from a10/22 , cut the rail to end at the dovetail cut.
    csmiffy likes this.
