Scope selection for 10/22

I shot Kerry Adams 22 practical shoot last weekend and had a great time for my first attempt 9th overall and 2nd Semi-auto. I shot both very well and at times terribly. I worked out why I missed every shot on "The valley" stage. I am using a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 3-9x40. The stage had targets placed up a valley at increasing ranges. There was no time to dial so hold overs were used. As the targets were spread out and target acquisition time was tight I used a low power setting adjusted my holdovers as range increased and missed every shot. I forgot I was using a SFP scope so shot over the top of all of them. Bugger! I did clear 5 stages and missed one shot on 2 others so if I could get my crap together next time should see an improvement in the score.

It was a really fun shoot with the Bathtub and Wobbly platform stages definitely sorting the men from the boys.

So I am casting around for a better scope. The Diamondback has a lot of good features not too bulky or heavy, forgiving eye box, lower power settings for wide angle of view, great re-zero system for the turrets and low price. How ever after the shoot I think a different approach is needed. So what do I want in the replacement scope in order of importance

FFP
Dialable turrets
Hold over reticle so not a BCD type must have hash marks for moa or mrad
Power up to x12-14 max
Objective lens 44mm max
Zero Stop
Side focus

Yeah I am not asking much, the whole idea is to keep the light weight 10/22 feel with a smaller scope not a 6-25x50. To get this type of scope in a Vortex which I have a heap of I have to go up to the Viper HS LR and its a 4-16x50mm.

What are your suggestions on scopes guys?

Is it possible on your current scope to make a custom stick on range sticker to elevation turret? Like the cds etc. There's a thread on here somewhere how to make them in PowerPoint or something.

Then just quickly dial the range rather than counting clicks.

Buying new toys is always fun though.

Thanks that might bes possible maybe, however the biggest problem on stages with limited time and multiple targets at different ranges is the SFP which mucks up your hold overs unless you are on max power.

Yeah that's where turrets like that could be quite handy if you didn't have ffp.

What kind of price are you looking at?

Also what size targets at what ranges? Haven't done one of those shoots personally, something I really need to address.

Just practice with your current scope on 9x. My other 22LR has a 3-9x40 on it and I basically never take it off 9x. The only stage i would have felt mildly disadvantaged on with 9x was the fish and I think your semiauto should make up for that on that stage.

@Konev and @Nibblet yup that would do it. I didn't look that far up their product range for price reasons. The older Gen1 would also do it at a better price. I just need to convince myself to spend more on a scope than I did on a rifle, extra mag, suppressor, sling and check riser oh and a crap load of ammo. Thanks guys

Compare it to a much more expensive scope so it looks much much cheaper by comparison and lie to yourself about how you'll hold on to it for ages and use it across multiple platforms in the future.

And compare it to what others have spent on a 22 as well, there's some pretty pricey ones out there that your's would probably match. Mine's probably one of them.

That's how I often convince myself.

Both Burris and Nikon make scopes especially for the .22 rimfie , they have a ballistic reticle that works well , my burris works out to 150 yrds and is very simple and fast to use.

Hi dermastor thanks for posting. There are very few Scopes ideal for 22 Shooting.Thy need close focus and FFP and I think 12x or 15-x .With 22 its shoot small or go home.3 and 4× are only needed for closeup spotlighting or finishers.

At Gillies tokoroa shoot there was a rapid stage with spaced targets too from 15 to 50m I think. I wound down to 8X for acquisition and held over in cm not my SFP mildots which is not ideal but I got away with it. The range variation and holdover was small so that one waS an easier stage far most people.

That state at the PSNZ22 shoot up the gulley was a good example of being able to combine dialling with reticle holds - the time limit and the requirement to shoot the targets in order from closest to furthest (~60m, 75m, 75m, 85m, and 140m - or something like that) and then closest to furthest again meant you really didn't get time to dial for them all. If the targets were not as large as they were I probably would have sacrificed the long target in order to focus on hits on the closest targets.

However, the technique that worked for me involved dialling the scope for the 85m target and then holding 1MIL low on the closest 60m target, then 0.5MIL low on the 75m targets, dead on for the 85m target, and finally 2.5MIL high for the long target. I shot this stage on 12x (my normal) using a supported kneeling position off the fence wire and managed to clean it with time to spare.

On this stage it was a slight advantage to have a reliable scope with adjustments matching your FFP reticle. In saying that, given the size of the targets I don't think this was needed either - there was plenty of competitors who only missed one or two shots on this stage.

FFP, side focus, Milrad, reticles that can be used for holdovers, dialable turrets, mid range variable power. No Zero stop though. Sure it wont be the best optics in the world but at USD$300 it is probably not a bad way to go. lighter and shorter than the Vortex PST GenII 3-15. The reviews if they can be believed say good things. I will be picking one up in the USA in February.

Looking for a lightweight scope is going to be the hardest box to tick when trying to find FFP and dialable turrets.

If you can find a Gen 1 PST 2.5-10 will probably be best suited to what you want, the Gen 2 would be a better scope but is a fair bit heavier than the Gen 1.
If you can still find a Leupold Mark 4, they are typically light weight compared to other optics of similar features.

Your existing scope is a bdc, you can make a chart of moa per hash mark at different magnifications easily as with a sfp halving the mag doubles the moa value of each hash. Its suprisingly accurate and much quicker than dialling on and off
