Thread: Searching for remmington 597 mag

Any chance anyone here knows where to get/ has and is willing to sell a Remington 597 magazine.
I have inherited a 597 that unfortunately has no magazine unfortunately they do not seem to be made/ sold anymore at least here in nz.

If anyone could help that’d be much appreciated,

The 597's were an unmitigated disaster, and their magazines were a major part of it. Quit while you are ahead!

I actually got mine sorted after a bit of work

Gun city chch ended up with left over Remington parts after the agent closed

They don't make them any more!

At the height of all the problems with them I re-engineered the magazine to be quite reliable and sent a dimensioned drawing to Remington for their info. The didn't use it but they did shelve the model which was good news for all!

Gundoc used to see a heap of them
The list of issues was pretty endless
Cracked receivers from use
Broken trigger housings
Magazine bases fall off
Tighten the barrel a fraction to much cracks the receiver
Magazine feed lips wear out as made of soft cast metal (not super common
Not many lasted that long )

The 17hmr ones were just plain dangerous
And we used to see them turn up after they had exploded
On there owners

My one isn't too bad, had to replace a bunch of parts to get it running reliably though.
Personally I'd probably just try selling unless you can find some magazines for cheap, it's not a rifle I'd ever want to sink much money into in 2025.

Thanks guys for the reply, sounds like it’s not really worth the hassle, would still buy a mag if a cheap mag if it popped up, what would it be worth to list it up for? Guessing not very much

Yeah like remingtlon 788 magazines for 170 bucks.
Equivalent of 70 bucks kiwi in the states
