Service rifle setup
Looking to get an upper setup for service rifle shoots as a way of getting regular trigger time. Will be a cat at this stage but will look for an e cat later
What sort of setup do you fellas run? Do people still shoot irons with the ar15? Or is it mostly acog style optics?
Needs to have the pinned front sight block yes?
Obv needs to be a milspec trigger, is there a preferred trigger that shooters run?
Will be shooting at the bop range fwiw
School me on what a good starter setup would be.
Cheers

A pinned FSB is required for the A1,A2, A3 and M4 style ARs. Not for the new NZDF LMT MARS clones.
A good milspec trigger is the ALG ACT or the Bravo (BCM) PNT. NZAR15 sells them, but is currently sold out.
If you can afford it, yes ACOGs, ELCANs and the like are used, but you can also get away with cheaper Burris/Vortex fixed power scopes.
Nothing wrong with open sights either.
I'm poor, so making do with the Vortex.

@grunzter is running a LMT clone.
You may find that CNIGC at Rotorua do more shooting of service rifle semis than BOP.

Yeah I believe they shoot at the bop deer stalkers range. I will likely join up

open sights are still used by a lot of people at club level, and even at the upcoming nationals 10% of compeditors are shooting in the open sights class.

open or Service class. you can shoot either
.. going open means you can shoot whatever you please... you don't need a Service rifle to shoot service rifle

if you decide to build a match rifle
have a read of the match code...
New Zealand Service Rifle Association - Service Match Code

Plus I forgot to mention, it's the nut behind the butt that matters, doesn't really matter what the budget is.
It's the shooters who enjoy putting the time in and shooting who do well.
I rocked up to CNIGC club shoot with a .22lr AR15 with a $350 Vortex Diamondback sporting scope and managed to top the shooting at 100m.
Obviously at 300m wasn't so good. :P

coated triggers not ok, qms was ok but not the ACT, as when I John Herbert.
read the match code

Cheers, didn't read that detail.

Fine rifles in the pictures. Have fun!
I wish confusion over "open sights" was over. It is iron sights and in this case they are closed iron sights.
The AR15 has closed iron sights, where you peep through a hole in the rear sight and sight across the front sight post.
Break barrel air guns, the SMLE No 1 Mk iii and the Mauser K98 come with open (iron) sights from the factory. The rear sight is located halfway between your eye and the front sight and is in the form of an open "V" or "U" notch.
Of course, if we shall be really pedantic, they are steel sights, but steel is mainly iron... (-:
In summary, whether iron or glass, open or closed, may our aims be true.
