Who runs a short 6.5 and how does it go? I'm interested in ones at around the 18" mark.
Has anyone tried a short 6.5-284?

Have you considered 6.5CM? I know they have less HP than a 6.5x284, but generally the 6.5cm do well with short barrels. Also If you're looking at running a shorter rifle than I would consider running a Short Action rather than a long action which a 6.5x284 will need.
260
17" 6.5 Grendel, 123gr 2430fps very accurate. Use 6.5CM or 260 if you want a bigger case, waist of time shortening a 6.5-284.
I was running a 16” Grendel.
Only 2300gps, but great little calibre.
Then Cindy decided to bolster her CV.
trading in the .284 bro?
Agree 260, looked at going 6.5x284 but with a short barrel it's a bit wasted.
6.5 saum
I have owned 2x 18" 260s. Both shot high BC 140gr pills between 2730-2770 so good out to 800yds~.
Just like to note those were not hot loads and mild powder (2209) so heaps of potential.
19" Creedmoor with 147gr ELDM @2750fps and a 14.5" Grendel with 123gr @ 2450fps both shoot great. The Creedmoor has dropped reds out past 500m no probs
Yeh waist of time going long action for a short barrel. You are less efficient and by using a short action you can run a longer barrel for the same overall length.
260rem for sure. super acccurate. low recoil. 6.5-284 is sweet also
6.5x284 would be epic but definitely want a long barrel
Speak to @300_BLK he had good results from a 6.5 Creedmoor 16".
I'm actually in the process of starting to put together one now, already have a Carbon stock, Oceania Defence suppressor and a VX-5HD CDS (probably overkill on the scope but I got it for a good price).
I did consider 260 but decided to stick with the 6.5 Creedmoor...now just got to find a Tikka T3x in 6.5 creedmoor.

@Been Upto nah bro, just thinking about new toys / ideas to play around with as always haha.
The 260 seems to have consistent rep as doing well from 18 inches and sounds like the creedmore and x55 would be the same. I get that a short barrel on something like the 6.5-284 is wasting a bit but that is the case with a few calibers I know running shorter barrels (7mm rem mag getting 2950 with 162s from 20inches. Everyone says it’s wasted being chopped but by virtue of the larger case capacity they still just get a bit more oomph then something smaller of the same length). Anyone played with one and have results to share? 300_BLK tagged me in a cool post of kiwi greg building an 18” PRC which looked sweet.
If I didn't have too many rifles and not enough time left to use them all I would get a Mauser M18 in 6.5prc for $1,250, chop it to 18-20" (I would do 20"), put a dpt on it and call it my only rifle. And feed it factory ammo.
Get brave, go 16.5" run any of the large range of 130gr bullets with BM-8208

6.5x47 Lapua would probably do better than Creedmoor
Duley made 16" 260s as bushpig and ran 100gr barnes ttsx at something like 3000~fps. That would be a fun little gun
I know you can get about 2600fps out of a 143grain in a 16" 6.5 Creedmoor which is what I'm aiming for.
That should be good till at least 500m with the scope I've got for it though to be honest 350 - 400m would be the absolute max for me for the type of hunting I plan to do with it.
Horses for courses I've still got a 24" Heavy Barrel R700 6.5 Ceeedmoor in the safe if I want to get more range...but I'm not carrying that around the bush.
I've got a 16" 260. 129 SST @ 2780, and 156g Oryx @ 2500, with the SST hitting 2.5" above the Oryx.
Not much better in a point n shoot gun. Heavies in the bush, and put a SST in past 200m.
Hmmmm - Quickload "says" that from an 18" barrel Reloader 17 should give 2850 fps with a 120gn at safe pressures . . . and it just so happens that I have the rifle (Rem Model 7) and some 120BT's and a tiny bit of RL17 left . . . .
