Shoot it, root it & then BBQ it !!!
A customer is pushing 180gr Bergers at 2900fps out of a 20"
Yup.
What powders do you have in NZ that suit it?
From what I gather you don't have Reload Swiss Powders, so it would be either unicorn dust (RL26) or Retumbo/H1000 equivalent?
Staball HD been reported as too slow for 7PRC, although Hornady supposedly use it in their ammo (hence why it is slow!)
RL26 is king of these cases as it doesn't run out of space. The new ramshot grand powder looks like it will be as good. Even RL26 shows 2900 with a 180 as 73kpsi in GRT roughly.
Ill have to have a chat to the fella.... I'd like to keep him alive, his a great customer.
I've got 2225/retumbo but I'm yet to shoot my 7prc, not sure when I'll have time to fiddle with it yet....

Why run a 20inch 7prc with a 180gr @ 2900, with what 73gr powder? When a 300 saum 18" barrel can throw a 178gr @ 2950fps with 60 grains of powder...
A 7mm 180 at 2900 starts beating a 178 at 2950 within 150m. There's also no option for factory with the 300saum and brass supply is shit.
Both are capable way beyond 99% of shooters anyway. Let the man burn his money so someone else can try it for cheap in a few months.

I was thinking the exact thing Lars.
I agree, if you’re going 20in or shorter then a 284 or 7SAUM burning about 60gn powder will pretty much achieve the same results. Near enough that deer @ 600yds won’t tell the difference. With 22in or longer bbl then the 7PRC has superior legs if you wanted to reach out a loooong way
In fairness a 7mm08 will quite easily kill deer at 600yards (if a shooter is able to hit it), a 20 inch 7prc will be faster than a 20 inch 7saum and that faster than a 7mm08.
Realistically we should find out what bullet we want to run and how fast it needs to go to/ or we want it to go, pick the barrel length we want and just pick the catridge that has enough horsepower. Without knowing what he needs/wants suggestions are mostly irrelevant.
