    Sighting a 308

    Hey guys,

I recently got a new scope for my 308 and have been told that I should be sighting it in at 200m whereas I have also been told 100m. Can anyone offer some advice as to what they would recommend? .

And also yesterday when we were testing the scope I had it shooting in a straight line up and down but as I began to adjust the height, the bullets started going all over the show (after roughly 20 shots). I was wondering if the barrel getting hot would effect this much? Otherwise theres always the possibility I'm just a shit shot

    Cheers

I would recommend sighting in at 200 if you hunt bush and river flats slips farm edges etc.
20 shots without a break could definitely cause some rifles to start to wander.
Check all screws on the rifle/scope mounts give it a good clean and fire 3 shots, measure the distance from group center to point of aim and adjust scope accordingly.
Fire another 3 shots, they should be on point of aim, if not probably your scope does not adjust as it says it does...this is not uncommon with cheaper scopes, not a problem once you have it zeroed tho.

Sounds like you're getting her a bit warm.

As for sighting in how far do you normally hunt?

I personally prefer a 100m zero and use my bdc retical to compensate. But as you have been told by your mates 200m is also good.

Also 20 rounds is alot of ammo to sight in. Just fire 3 shots to see if shes even putting them in the same area then measure to the center and move the scope to suit. Next shots should be zeroed. Gear and shooting skill related*

Thanks for that guys, will give it a really good clean and see if that helps and also try what you've said next time im out at the range. I generally hunt bush so pretty close but also have areas with clearings up to around 300m wide.

Here is a typical 150 gr 308 bullet at a realistic 2790fps so simulating factory ammo zeroed at 200y
You can see it is all but dead on from 20y-50y so perfect for bush ranges no more than 2 inches high at 100 (still not a miss) on at 200.
Basicly point and shoot to 250y

As already said slow 3round groups are best at 100 m u should be about 2_3 inches high for a 200 zero. I like a bdc reticle as it saves guesstimates but depends on the scope btw what make?is it.

If you're new to this game you'd be best to sight your rifle in at 100 yards - it should be 2 inches high; as Cam said.

It will then dead 'dead on' at 200 yards and good to just 'point and shoot' to 275 yards; which for a new hunter is a reasonable shot.

I always feel the need the validate at ranges. 100, 200, 250. Difference between 75yds and 275 can be a long gone deer.
I fire a lot at 100-150 yards and try to have them grouping between 1"-2" high at 100 depending on the type of hunting I'm about to be doing.

As VC said. I sight in for 1.8" high at 100m to put me zero at 200m. Anything between me and 250m goes bang flop
