    Stock choices and materials.

I want to start a thread to discuss the actual pros and cons of different materials.

I'm looking for a new stock for my 708 how's,
I have several Howas and Vanguards most with houge rubberised stocks and one with the plastic fantastic Weatherby job.

I'm now looking at two main options,

Boyds laminate and Bell & Carlson Medalist.

Which one would you choose and why?

    Cheers,
    William

Carbon fibre would be awesome I agree but who makes them for the Howa. And keep I mind, it's not going on a Kimber or Blazer, aren't carbon fibre stock going to cost as much as a whole how's?

Senator stocks or Stug on here both do carbon fibre stocks in NZ. How much is a B&C stock by the time it's imported?

Looking at a boyds for my .270 howa they seem to be the only ones I can find that do a long action without costing the earth. The houge stocks just dont cut the mustard would be alright for a bush rifle but as soon as I chuck the bipod on it bends up and rests on the barrel.

I had a boyds on my howa. Looked nice and the finish held up very well. Was a little slick when wet but nothing to bad.
They are a bit heavy though. Made mine a bit of a mission to carry in hand. Fine slung over the soulder.

I would go the B&C, they come with a bedding platform allready and whilst not being super ligh are almost a pound lighter than the equivelent boyds

Gunworks has a SA high tech composite for sale now. Could be another option.

On my 7mm RM I bedded it and set a aluminum bar in the forend. Works really well and the rife can shot sub half moa with my hand loads, I would do the same with my light weight Howas but I have 3 with the same green stock, I'm probably going with the B&C as it's 2 pounds and I like the shorter LOP. Boyds can make anything you want but charge for any extra. For the stock I want of them it would be 200usd and the B&C is 249usd.

I have one of each you mentioned. Both great for purpose. The only reason I would look at something else would be to save weight if needed.
There is a good article in the latest R&R on stock choice.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.
