Has anyone done a short barreled 16-18" 6.5-300 WSM or 6.5-284?
Keen to hear about the ballistics in comparison to the 260 / 6.5x55.
Yeah, I know it will be loud as F**K and burn more powder for little gain over a 260 etc... maybe :ORLY:
But sometimes you just want to find out for yourself :thumbsup:

Have done plenty of short barrelled magnums in 7 mm
With the right powder choice they whip standard chamberings for max velocity.
Thanks @7mmsaum , I think with light bullets and fast powders it will be good.
Have had a 6.5x 284 with 20" and could only get 2800fps with 130grns and 57 grn of powder now I get that with my 260 and 46 grns of power.
Barrel also gets very hot after 3 shots. I think you need a 26" barrel for the 6.5 x 284 you might be better with the .284.

For a bush pig why don't people look at getting a 9.3x57 or 62 and chop the barrel down and suppress, rifles are reasonably cheap and
I'd imagine not much would walk away.?
Get a 270 mate and cut it to 10 inches.
The blast alone will kill everything inside 50 meters [emoji6]

Probably because very few "bush pigs" are used as intended (in the close bush at shorter ranges), and are mostly used for general purpose out to some quite long ranges.Quote:

All you need is a standard 22inch 243, factory 100gr ammo and you got the super bush pig:thumbsup: Works darn well, no money spending, never had a issue with weight, length of barerll or performance in tight bush, it works. Even my back up 308 is 24 inch, never thought once about chopping it as never worried me at all about the extra length.....but that's just me , I just bushstalk with what works for me, and the mighty 243 rat rifle works a treat :thumbsup:

I've just had a 7saum super pig built. I think it's a bloody good balance for a do all type rifle. It's light, short, quiet and it well capable in the bush or out to 800 yards. What's not to like.

I was considering building it on a Sako 85 but there is no lefty in stainless. Once you get rid of all the shit tikka bits they are actually a reasonable action.
Barrel is 18" it's shooting 168 classics hunters. I'll have to check the load data it was load developed by NZ Hunter not me. I'll come back to ya.Quote:

I have a 'bush pig' 6.5x284 - started out as a factory Tikka stainless 6.5x55.
Has been, rechambered, shortened to 17.5" and a durillium suppressor fitted (along with fluting, half bolt etc etc).
Rifle has been a bit of an experiment (bought the rifle when I exchanged my credit card points for H&F vouchers - it was either the rifle or home appliances etc for my wife!)...
Only in the initial load development phase. I have started with Norma 130grain Diamond Lines (which I have several hundred of - but to be fair are probably not the best for pushing to max velocity given a long bearing surface etc). I am using Reloader 17 (which has given the best velocities so far - over AR2209 and AR2213SC, which I have also tried).
To be honest, it has been a bit disappointing.
I don't have direct experience with 6.5x284 in longer barrels (although do also own a 6.5x300WSM and a 6.5 Rem Mag - the latter has only has about 1 gr greater case capacity over a 6.5x284). Looking online with long barrelled rifles it appears that some people are getting close to or over 3000 fps in 6.5x284 with 140 grain match projectiles - with up to - or in some cases over - 50 grains of RL 17.
Using the 130 gr Diamond Lines (i.e. 10 grains lighter than the above) seated well out (but not into the rifling) I have maxed out at around 47 grains of RL17 in Lapua brass. After that I was getting ejector marks etc. Shoots very well but I am only getting an average of 2711 fps. If the barrel were 16" like a true bush pig (if there is such a thing!) I expect it would be under 2650 fps.
Although the Diamond Lines have a great BC (.548), the reality is that a straight 284 Bush Pig (i.e. 7mm) kicks its arse 'grain for grain' when loaded with a 162 gr Hornady Amax etc. I expect even a 7mm08 will do better than 2700 fps with a 130 grainer (albeit with a lower BC)...
By further comparison in my 6.5 Rem Mag (again, effectively the same case) I am getting 3213 fps average with a 129gr Hornady on top of 54gr of RL 17 in a 24" barrel.
I am going to try some different projectiles (probably 120gr ballistic tips) but have put load development on hold as I don't want to burn up any more of my remaining RL 17.

I found the same results as Huntsika I used 2217 and was getting 2800fps with the 130 Nosler AB and that had a 20" barrel.
I tried RL17 but it was no better so I sold the bits and went down the .260AI 10 grains less powder same speed..
That will be my next build after the Sako 270w barrels burnt out will rebarrel to a 16" .284w and should be good for 750m, after using a 12" barrelled 300 Blackout, I got the bug for short barrelled rifles.Quote:
