any smiths or guys in the know about weather this can be done? :D
Could be done but i dont think i would want it anything bigger on a t3 in front of my face:dizzy:
An i also would want a propper recoild lug in the sucker rather than the piece of allot an a shitty bit at that
but my 2c
Cheers for the advice! Any actions youd reccomend? Im not concrete on the t3, just you could get them under 1500 new
Buy a Rem 700 , same price , more options on accessories for build
I think roedale precision in Germany does 338 lapua on them, but in NZ I wouldn't bother.
Get a rem stainless or chromo for under a grand, then send to to someone to have it built.
Let us know how you get on, I'm looking into building one again.
Chris
I asked gunworks the same thing a year back and was told "no fucking way mate" :o
Gunworks won't even build me a 338 lapua on a rem 700.
Not surprised really.
Chris
I won't build a Lapua or Norma mag boltface on a 700 either unless it has a M16 type extractor like a 700P or PTG etc aftermarket bolt.
just went into hunting n fishing, magnum calibres 700 arent on special...bugger. whys that greg? is the action too weak or requires too much mucking around with?
Its no big deal to put the m16 extractor, its just gunworks don't want to do it.
Wether you get a magnum donor rifle or not, the bolt face still needs to be opened up anyway, so just buy a 270 or something.
Chris
No wee chrissy.... They just didnt want to do it for "YOU"
sorry for my naivety on the area Chris , but u dont need a magnum action for the donor rifle?
Most guys that open the Std or magnum face up to Lapua use a Sako extractor, not a m16 type that has a pin through it & is much less likely to come visit you if there is a major issue/catastrophic failure.
There is not a lot of metal left on the 700 bolt face once it is opened up to fit a Lapua case, from .532 to .590"
A 300 winmag to a.338 is a rebarrel. Using a.338 winmag T3 you could just rechamber to something like a .338 sin. if you actually want a .338 that is
338 SIN Loads - LongRangeHunting Online Magazine
Theres 30 odd pages about it on the same site.
correct me if im wrong but the best option to get to the 338 edge is rem 700 .300 win mag donor rifle rebarrelled with the bolt face opened up and im there? is there any more gunsmithing involved or things i need to consider in the action?
so is it the same for a rem700 7 rem magnum? just a rebarrel?
cheers for the info guys...project underway :D
I'm all for needless projects, and modifying/upgrading shit for no reason at all so I'm probably the wrong person to ask this, but why?
In real life there is no real difference between the 2 for ranges under 800 and bugger all for distances over either. Unless you can really shoot the ballistic advantages of the .338 will be lost in the 'noise' for anything under 1000.
I would probably spend the money on a S&B whack it on the win mag and shoot it till the barrel is knackered. In the interim save up more cash and learn a bit about shooting at distance blah, blah, blah.
Actually, ignore all that and just do what makes you happy :)
Some people just like bling I suppose!
There is quite a difference in windage, and its all about giving your self the best chance of a hit, so I can definitely see the desire.
The 300 win mag is good, but the 338's around 2800 fps are in a different league entirely.
I actually went the other way, from a 300 winmag to a 6.5x284, but for laziness reasons more than anything else!
Chris
haha i feel what ur saying proudkiwi. and your probably right, but everywhere i shoot is breezy, and the goal of the build was for a rifle to fire 300smks to 1000 + . 338 lapua seemed to expensive . i always feel that bigger is better too haha. as well as the ooooh factor haha. i wouldnt say im an olympic shooter but am fairly confident on long range shooting, and can afford the build so why not
All good :)
If you've got the money to do it I would be looking at something a bit cooler and unique than a dirty old Edge. I dont personally know anyone that still has one anymore now that I think about it.........?
One thing I have learnt is there is a VERY!!!! limited amount of people in NZ that I would get to build me a rifle anymore..........gunsmith is a pretty loose description around these parts.
For some reason I thought you had sold your ones? No idea why I thought that though!
You will however be one to admit that there are cooler rounds around :)
Mate there are plenty of cooler rounds around, the Edge is the 223 of the 338s but it is simple & cheap to build.
I have a 26"one for sale :)
The 338 Norma is really gaining ground against the Lapua in the States, I have two they are fantastic
The 338s are losing ground to the 375s as 375 projectiles become more available/affordable.
The 375 is in a completely different league to the 338s
