They don't make like they used to.... thank goodness !!!!

Currently rebarreling an old Blued Rem 700 308 Target/Tactical for a client, pulled the old barrel off & found this....

When going into the receiver cock in a sock doesn't even begin to describe the first 3/4's of the thread,

It has been abused & had a besquillion rounds through it, used to shoot fantastically, easily 1/2 moa & better right out there

Looks like your typical tapered pipe threading. Oh, yes, Remington. Probably found a bit of old pipe leaning against the wall at the back of the factory.

Actually it's quite an impressive bit of machining to get the bottom of the end threads flat whilst also reducing the thread depth. Not just a matter of machining a tapered thread.

Goes to show that over engineering is not always better if 4 threads hold ok why have more?

there's at least 4 good threads for full engagement... easily be able to torque that up to 100 ft/lb

Obviously that's the answer to accuracy, so what's the problem?

3 threads (depending on pitch and other stuff) is all that is needed for maximum strength (tensile) in theory, also a 25% reduction in thread height from the tops and bottoms of the thread only results in a 9% reduction in strength.'
That said the main consideration of a barrel threaded into an action is not thread strength....

The thread pictured sure is an interesting one....looks to me like the one thread has been turned at not one but two pitches close to the same and as the pitches diverge less thread is left.

Yup that's close to what I know bout threads-60% of the thread is 90% of the strength etc.
I was thinking the same thing about the thread-it looks like it was the wrong thread pitch by maybe 1 tpi
