Tikka 8 twist 243

Anyone have one?

What sort of performance are you getting? Do they have a reputation of being fussy?

I'm just about done with my 223 adventure (that's a story for another thread). I was pretty keen on a 223 but after hearing about all the accuracy issues and tendency for 223 barrels to be fussy I'm leaning back towards a 243. I'm set up to load for either and I will be loading for whichever I end up getting.

Currently own a 300wsm that shoots lights out and I want something smaller for smaller game (fallow, goats, long range hares). I don't hunt Dinosaur often :P

I dont think .223 barrels are any fussier than any other chambering. Probably less so. It's just there's a lot more people have recently started measuring precision properly in .223 vs anything else.

Leaves me in a bit of a quandary no less.

I'm not looking to shoot it in competition but I want to have decent accuracy and I have experienced that from other Tikka rifles in the past. My 6.5 PRC was a tack driver and shot 12 shots under an inch at 100. My 300 wsm, also a tack driver. Both Tikkas.

Just want to hear from people who have them if they tend to be good or not so good.

I wouldn't say the .223 are fussy mine shoots pretty much any bullet under 1" but I don't use factory ammo

I have a 1:8 T3X with standard factory 22" barrel. My loads have the 108gn ELD-Ms at 2900fps and 85gn Makers Trex at 3200fps. The ELD-Ms seem more accurate than the Makers but the Makers are still more than acceptable for the ranges I will be using them for.

Have you found any other bullet weights work well? Probably won't run the spendiest ones all the time. Something like 87 VMAX for goats? Or the likes of the speer or Hornady hollow points?

I haven't used anything else.

87gr vmax in my 243 have worked well shooting goats.

Was that in an 8 twist?

Don't over-think it, there's no reason an 87gr won't shoot well in a good 1:8" twist barrel.

No, 10twist old ruger.
I shot many deer & goats with the 87gr sp over the years. That was my "big" cartridge rifle :thumbsup:

I guess that's what I'm trying to determine. Tikkas pre the 8 twist 243/223 all seemed to be good barrels.

Are they still good barrels? The WSM I have is a T3, the 6.5 PRC was a T3X, I forgot about the 17hmr that's a good one too, a couple of T3 7mm08s they were good too.

I probably am overthinking it, I'm just at the end of going through the experience of returning a rifle that wouldn't shoot and I don't particularly want to go through that again. 1st world problems am I right?

All firearms purchases are a gamble. If you decide you need xx level of accuracy buy a cheap tikka donor and pay a reputable gunsmith to install a well regarded match barrel. Ideally in NZ id have trueflite does it. Not because I think they have the best barrel but its easiest to get a solution if it dodnt shoot when the barrel manufacturer is also the gunsmith. I dont know if any other smiths guarantee there work in NZ

I know of others mate had a full custom built in 7 saum no mater what cold bore was always off then it would print lovely little groups it went back for examination had multiple loads put threw it they found the same so chambered him a new barrel out of stock that shot fantastically importer contacted proof and dealt with the refund which I believe was pain free . That how ever is one positive result from a custom job compared to a long list of negatives iv had a few tikkas with bartliens (always to get a non factory chambering) never being disappointed
