Just finished reading the article on the Kimber 280 AI. Seems like a good off the shelf tops rifle, light weight, reasonably accurate, any one else had experience with them?

Lots of people have man.
They are great to carry but with the stock design and lightweight some people struggle to shoot good groups with them.
I personally havnt shot one yet but spoken to quite a few who have them
Yea had one but not in that cal didn't like the swing safety so sold it on, but it shot well and was a pleasure to carry.
I'd agree with both of the above. The Safety is ok but only ok it is.
I never shot any real tight groups with my 280ai and it got the 140 and 150's really moving and I believe it was more me than the rifle.
The only real reason I sold that rifle was because it had a 24" barrel and I suppressed it. I didn't want to chop that calibre to a 18 or 20". Would have buggered things real quick.
Would I buy another in such a set up? Only maybe. Beautiful to carry and use on animals but to be frank nothing a 708, 284 wouldn't do in a tikka, so for cheaper.

Yeah buy a Tikka T3 finnlight (with the fluted barrel) in 7mm-08 and have it rechambered to 284win, or just get the same rifle in 7 Rem Mag, put a dial-able scope on it and call it done.
Cheers for the feed back. maybe wait until they produce a high power low price Sako carbonlite :pacman:
a good mate had one in 7mm-08 for a bit, felt like a kids toy didn't feel like a real rifle..... most people say there not accurate actual fact there very accurate just they are very hard to shoot accurately coz they have sacrificed nice to shoot for light id rather have something a little heaver with a proper length and shaped stock
I have a Kimber 84l in 30-06, would imagine it'd be a perfect "tops" rifle. I love the way it points for me, have chopped it to 18 or 20inches and put on one of Scott Traills suppressors, it has more than enough grunt for me and is superbly accurate, and light:cool:
I just created my own, Tikka M595 in 284 win just bedded into a McMillian Sako Hunter Carbon stock, so its more like a Tikka Carbonheavy ;-)

Shooting either the 150gr NBT's or the 162 Amax it will be good out to 600-700 yards.
Seriously tho, a T3 flutted Finnlite chambered in 284win, 280AI, 7mmSAUM or 7mm Rem Mag put into a locally made Carbon stock would fit the bill very well and give you plenty of budget left over for a good scope, and still save money on the Sako Carbonlite
What is a "tops rifle" anyway?
And is it illegal to use a "bush pig" above a certain altitude, or a " tops rifle" below a certain altitude? Do they have minimum and maximum weights?
So then I wonder what an "all rounder" might be like? Are there rules for them too?
I find all of this very confusing.
I know 27.5 inch barrels are fucken shit to drag through the scrub
My Mauser is a top rifle ;)
A tops rifle is something that can shoot longish distances accross gullies etc. Thats not to say you can't use your 16 inch barreled 308 bush pig with red dot sight but there are better choices and calibers for shooting 300m plus.
Carbon fiber stocks are definitly the next fashion trend.
I have created this thread to list current firearms fashion.

im a major kimber fan
I have a 243 montana as my main rifle and it really feels like a 22 to carry
I have plenty of rifles to choose from including a sako 75 and a tikka t3 as well as others like old brno 601s
I still think the montana is the best rifle in my safe
shoots extreamly accurate like touching bullets at 100m with winchester factory 80gr
suppressor makes it about the perfect weight to point shoot(dpt modular)
fits my kind of hunting which is basically a walking varmiter with a whole lot of walking for 1 to 2 shots
I never use the safety, its backwards from memory
for a long action I went with a tikka t3 7mm08 and reamed it to 280 but thats just because that was the only stainless synthetic I could get at the time
I do stress that I LIKE the kimber, the way they have cut weight in every way possible ect
no floor plate or mag does make it feel cheep tho, like a savage
Can't go wrong with a *insert brand of rifle you like* chambered in a caliber that burns 40-50 grains of powder firing a 6.5mm, 7mm or .30 cal projectile in the weight range of 130-180 grains and a scope of your choice, suppressor optional
For me its a Tikka T3 6.5x55 with a Zeiss 3-9x40 on top chopped to 18.5" and suppressed. I now use 120gn pro hunters but had 140 amax's running 2600, could easily done more with a different powder out if the short barrel.
My homework looking for an alpine/tops rifle lead me to a custom 280Ackley based on rem700 270 as donor action. Had picked up a Browns Kevlar pounder stock a year or so back and got Grant at Trueflite to true the action, and add a 24in 280Ackley UM barrel No3 profile fluted and bed the action. Gunworks did the bolt fluting & changed trigger over the Timney Calvin elite. Bare rifle weighs 6 lbs. All up with VX6 & rings its under 7.5 lb . Pushing 162 AMAX 2900 - 2950 fps, but only just started on load dev. Looked at idea of factory options like Kimber and Forbes, but reports were variable in regard to long range accuracy. So went for custom build ... besides its a lot of fun. Attachment 41664
Tops gun i view is a rifle fit for long carry with ability to shoot longer distance along with glass ware to support tat requirement
Also not so much growth on the tops longer barrel ok and generally with more time to prepare a shot muzzle breaks an option re ear plug application - suppressor alo optional
Of course you could bush pig it and stalk - but bush pigs also a style ie "bush" pig vs "tops" gun
And yes excuse to buy more
Ive chosen a .270 for bush/clearing gun
.300 or 7mm mag for tops work
.338 for long range ie tahr - chamois novelty
Wats the cost in making a 284?
Far out, rifles for tops, bottoms, clearings and bush, uphill and what next?
Some guys must need more gun bearers than an 1880's African Safari lol
So besides the rechamber about the same as any other gun you reload for!
I had my 7mm08 rechambered to .284. I just went and brought a few packets of factory ammo and have been using that a bit as well as some hand loads. First load went really well so have not changed it. Very, very minimal fuss shooting/hunting. Dies were cheap off trade me as well!
It's that dilemma where you hate carting around the heavy rifle all day and despise it, but the smile on your face when you line up behind the heavy bitch and you know it will do the business and he's your friend again
What's wrong with a 280 Rem or 7x64. Are these not easier than the 284 win regarding ammo, cases,.....
I necked up, simple. But the 280Rem would be as much as a novelty as a 284 here IMO. Not in the States obviously. Nothing scientific; even I sorted it.

Well, I was going to say this looks a little like an average day on one of Kotuko's goose hunting trips.
But that bloke on the left has matching thongs....oops jandals... there goes the asperger under arm bowler in me.... and his mate has more than a bag limit on his head.
