What you can't do is leave it un-secured in a car/hotel/motel room for any extended period. The laws a bit grey here because if a trip to the hunting grounds includes an overnight stay then the police would prefer you had room service rather than leave it in the room while you get dinner. Basically when the firearm is not secured it needs to be under your supervision.
Are you being guided by a NZ firm? If so, can they look after the rifle while you're not in the bush? Gun shops close to the area you are hunting would be the other logical choice. Will you be keeping the rifle in NZ, sending it home or selling it again after the hunt?
That aside, have you given any thought for how you will sight the rifle in before you hit the bush? If you're starting in Auckland for instance you might find it hard to get some range time in before the hunt.
