Winchester Model 70 Featherweight, in .30/06. She is an old campaigner and I have had her for many years. She shoots extremely well, despite looking battered. Half the checkering is worn off the port side due to rubbing on a pack. The Leupold M8 was made the same year - 1981, and still serves very well.

But it always annoyed me that it had an old ugly ventilated recoil pad, and the length of pull was too short. I tried putting it in a different stock, but I actuallly like the old repeating arms featherweight stock, its one of the best rifle stocks ever designed I think, and I couldnt find a replacement. So I thought I would do something about it.

After seeing what they did with shotguns to increase length of pull, I fabricated another butt end, spliced it to the rest of it and fitted a butt plate (because I had some laying around) The walnut almost matches. Anyway I like it well enough that I don't notice it anymore, and it fits me.
I may fit a traditional red/orange recoil pad to it yet. Just because.

The old Trapper Nelson wooden frame packs were buggers for wearing and damaging the fore-end of stocks.

Yeah, for years I had a pack with external aluminium frame that did the same. Hallmark I think was.

I've been enjoying looking at the way guns used to be so thought I'd post one that fits the bill.
This was my main hunting rifle for many years and despite having succumb to the practicalities of stainless synthetic, I still dust it off for a couple of outings each year. It is scary accurate with what ever you decide to shoot out of it (as I hear a lot of rifles in this caliber are). The action feels like it runs on ball bearings and is the smoothest in my safe by a long way. I'm currently running 270 gr pills at a tad under 2700 fps and given the general construction of the projectiles it's an emphatic slayer of game without too much 'splatter' (although the 235 grain Speers at 2900fps are a bit more ''). Also, for those that are wondering it's way nicer to shoot that my 30 cal. magnum shooting 200 grain bullets at 3020 fps.

Sako .375 H&H (well before the cost cutting started :-) )

Also, cheers all for the great pictures in this thread!

Woops typo DOM '73 so she's done 50 laps of the Sun,although the donar Walnut tree might have already done a hundy before that.Disceased estate.Every job has it's perks. If you were a US GI stationed to the cold war front line in West Germany looking over the Wall you could export back to the States Euro firearms less customs, excise, taxes, wholesalers bla bla thru their PX exchange system.Freighted in the hold of a Herc so no transport costs, etc.Dont know the full ins & outs of the scam, but think you were officially allowed one firearm per year.Every grunt stationed over there took full advantage to cash in on the scam to top up their greenbacks.Flog them off once back Stateside. This one according to it's attached documentation was shipped by a Major who perhaps didn't need the coin due to an elevated rank salary?May have got stashed in his safe once returned? The rest is history & now it's in mine
