    Which way is up?

Hi all the forum scope experts.. Got a quick question.

The other night I was in the cave reassembling my latest project, and after putting the scope back on, I wanted to check it sat the same as my other 22 of the same make.

That's when I noticed that the turrets on the latest project sat 90 degrees rotational difference to the other 22. That is, the turret marked up was on top of the scope and the one that's marked left under the cap was on the right horizontal.

The original from the shop 22 has the turret marked left on the top of the scope, and the one marked up is on the left horizontal.

Which way is up? Do all scope turrets sit in the same planes? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Actually, i just got it........ i think.

The "original" rifle is set up wrong, the turret with up (elevation) should be on top, and the turret with "left" (windage) should be on the right side.

Humblest apologies. I will grab some tomorrow. The positioning of the turrets is taken looking from the blunt end of the rifle towards the projectile ejection hole at the front.

Yes as Ryan said the upand downy turret should be on top unless is is some bizzare type of scope.

Up goes to the top and the horizontal ends up on whatever side it ends up on. I have a Russian scope that has the turret for horizontal on the "wrong" side but the reticle is a pillar style so it was kinda obvious which way was up even if I couldn't read Cyrilic (Russian writing?)

I get what you mean and while almost all scopes have the turret on the top and the right, not all do this so there are a few that stick out on the left.

as a side note to this I did have a Winchester 94 that I side mounted a scope on .... I turned the scope on its side (windage on top and elevation on the left as the 94 is top eject and I didn't want cases hitting the scope) and I also wanted to be able to look down the iron sights with no obstruction.... worked fine

Vertical adjustment should be on top and horizontal adjustment on the side. Probably a case of someone mixing them up and screwing the wrong caps to the turrets.

Last year I was wanting to see what the BAR shot like at 300 metres and I had taken the scope off while shagging about with the action. Put it back on and spent some time making sure that it was all nice and level
and then buggered off to shoot it in. Fired off a couple and it was all over the place, played around with the scope and then had a magic moment, you fuckwit, turned the scope 90 degress and all was OK again.
