What can be done to improve the Remington Model 7 trigger?

I like a nice light pull weight, ideally somewhere around the 1.5-2lbs mark which will be the same as other rifles in the stable. This is my first Remington I’ve owned, and all other rifles are Tikkas fitted with ‘Yo Daves’ aftermarket trigger springs.

I have no experience with Remington triggers to know if this is even possible with the factory trigger, online tutorials show me how to adjust the grub screws, but realistically can I (or a gunsmith) achieve what I’m wanting with the factory setup, or do I throw it away and buy something aftermarket.

Also, the safety on this rifle seems to need a lot of force to engage, disengage. I’m not sure if this is typical but seems excessive.

What have others done with their Mod 7’s to improve the trigger and what is the best I can hope for without having to fork out for something aftermarket?

Buy a Timney. The later generation trigger is shite for adjustment & to my knowledge there is one aftermarket spring kit available from the US especially designed for it but the guy won't export.

The aftermarket $500 triggers are great but for a hunting rifle a gunsmith can usually get the factory trigger pretty good. The gergara version of the Remmy trigger is also a step up, but then the bolt release is a bit of a faff.

Replace it.you aren't using safety now so your options for replacement don't necessarily need safety either. Mine has a jewel trigger and no safety catch. Fantastic to use,I simply revert to that not shut bolt on semi chambered round that causes so much controversy. Fourty five years without issue so far for me.

Timney

Depending on which model Rem trigger you have, it won't be able to be safely adjusted below 3-4 pounds of pull and if it's the later versions and you aren't lucky maybe 7-8 pounds haha. A Timney or other aftermarket option rated to be adjusted that low is where you are needing to go. Noting that this is mainly the area of target rifle triggers which are often a bit more precious than some other designs...

That is a really light pull for a hunting rifle you are wanting though - guess you don't hunt in gloves. I was hunting in the bloody Kaimai's and got a supplejack vine flick around after I stood on it's mate and the end of it got hooked up in the triggerguard of the rifle - safety catch was on and I think that prevented an accidental discharge but it still gave me the shits. I went back to a Mauser military type double pull trigger for a while. It's something to consider if hunting in real tight country and you like a really light pull weight.

I replaced the spring in mine with a section cut from a BIC lighter. Helped a bit, but I will be replacing it with an aftermarket trigger when funds allow.

Recently replaced mine with a timney, a little bit costly but the improvement in experience has been priceless

Triggertech.

It will kick the arse of a Timney (which will ALWAYS have a degree of creep, even with dangerous levels of sear engagement).

I've got 2 Triggertechs, and rate them. The basic concept of rollers rather than pins in holes makes a lot of sense for something used in dirty conditions.

I've spent a few hours following this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWzN7bsk50g the trigger is now better but still not something I can live with and nowhere near on par with the Tikka so it will just annoy me.

So, now the question is Timney vrs Trigger tech and where best to source one?

I managed to adjust my M7 trigger to a let's say not to bad for a bush rifle weight by adjusting the screws. Tested the crap out of it banging the butt and slamming bolt shut then gave to a mate to repeat and check. Locktite screw afterwards.

Have a triggertech on M700 that is fantastic and would like one for the M7 but none in country so need to be ordered in.

There was a trigger recall on some Mod sevens. If you fall in the bracket and it hasn't been done you can elect to upgrade to a Timney or whatever, I did this and so a Timney upgrade was chump change. Free plug for Hamills Tauranga :thumbsup:

Got a model 7 with its original trigger.

It was originally really light. Got it sorted by a gunsmith to be a tad heavier. It's about 1.5lbs now and is a gem. Just get it tuned to your liking by a competent gunsmith and you'll be right.

You have to remember that from the late 1980's onwards, triggers on new rifles were designed by lawyers, not gunsmiths.

The aftermarket ones are designed by gunsmiths.

My late 1970's Ruger 10/22 had a beautiful smooth trigger. The early 00's one I picked up cheap had a trigger you almost dislocated your finger attempting to pull it:omg:

Timney

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) it's not one of the models that is affected by the recall.

I think this might be a case of trying to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse when considering what I'm trying to match, and I like all my rifles with the same(ish) trigger pull so I don't get caught out. After more dicking around I just can't get an acceptable pull weight without it becoming dangerous.

Cam (Alpine precision) can get in the Trigger Techs, but needs to do 15 or so at a time - are there 15 dissatisfied Model 7 owners out there looking to upgrade, otherwise it looks like I'll have to go the Timney route.

I have a Triggertech on a Model 7 and a Timney on a different rifle. I really like the Triggertech trigger, it's a tad heavier than the Timney, but I actually like the overall feel of it a bit better than the Timney. YMMV, but that's my 2c.
I have heard that with the Model 7 Timney some may struggle to get a low weight, which is why I went with the Trigger Tech. In hindsight, no regerts.

Yeh, +2 on dissatisfied m7 trigger, have faffed around with mine quite a bit and of the same opinion heavy to unsafe...just dosent want to settle where I would like.
Did find that if I left a little free play travel in the trigger itself the sear could be set to a softer yet safer range, but still little more than i would like.

I think it's safer to say that one can imagine that a trigger tech may be a marginally nicer feeling trigger in some circumstances. The timney is a perfectly fine trigger and doesn't hold a shooter back from exceptional results. Internet imaginary difference syndrome strikes again

The factory Xmark trigger is irredeemable

Jewel.....it's just noooice to use and oh so easy to adjust.

Trigger tech or Timney I'll take whatever I can get my hands on and highly doubt id be able to tell the difference.

Tell me, for those that have the Timney are they adjustable within the range they claim.

Gunworks is local to me and advertising the Timney but also state: Timney website says 1.5lb to 4lb but the lowest our gunsmiths could get to was 3-3.5lb

For some reason people's fingers seem to believe everything thier eyes read. I've tried both Bixn'andy and Triggertech (2 of) and the Timney Calvin Elite is better than either in any sensible hunting weight, the measured letoff is more consistent and with better feel.

If the current factory Rem trigger is about 50% good, then the Bergara can be gotten to 75% (extremely usable for any hunting rifle including varminting and informal match/gong shooting), the triggertech/Bixn'andy 85%, the high grade timneys a smidge more and if you want stupid good then you're looking for one of the old BR Jewels or a Chompart design - the "GC" trigger approach 100%.

I have used both, the Timney sucks. They are for the most part a copy of the original Remington trigger with mostly similar internals.

The Triggertech is much easier to adjust and impossible to make unsafe. There have been issues with the Diamond line in 'custom' actions but their Special line is pretty bombproof.

Timney has nearly dropped out of the competitive rifle scene for a reason. Yes, people are free to choose an objectively worse product for simillar money (like buying a new Leupold instead of an Element or Sako instead of a T3) but can't complain that they were not warned...

The "weight" of the trigger is only one of several performance characteristics, a well designed and set up 730gm trigger can be way superior and aid good shooting compared to a poor 450 gm

100% correct on both counts @gimp - based on actual experience of owning a Model 7 with a Timney trigger I don't sit at home crying because it doesn't have a Triggertech trigger. In the real world it's more than good enough :thumbsup:

Something to note on the Triggertechs that can be percieved as a negative, there is next to no overtravel AKA 'backwall'. Some in the Benchrest crowd believe it to be a big deal but without a 20lb rifle and non-man portable rifle rests, I can't see the downside.

I've just checked my Timney with a Wheeler trigger gauge and its bang on 1.5lb. This is the first time I have tested it, as I only got the gauge recently as a gift. I originally just adjusted to how I liked it and did a few bump tests etc for safety. It's been set at this for about 3 years now.

I have replaced a few factory shit triggers over the years mainly with Timney and they have worked well for me.
My Forbes rifle came with a Timney trigger from the factory

The pictured trigger is a Rem "walker" design - these had the two-piece internals with a separate 'sear' that fitted over the trigger and was held in place by spring pressure.

Far as I'm lead to believe the later Model 7 that came out with the Xmark poo trigger used a standard one that also fitted the 700 action (a lot of the model 7-specific options state they won't work to replace the Xmark style trigger I think). Bit harder with the older walker style as the options are limited with the bolt release design, although as an option I am fairly sure a gunsmith could work on it to achieve better results.

Triggertech would be my suggestion!

Ive got an elite hunter in mine. Advertised as adjustable 2-4lbs. Got mine down to 2lbs no issues and was still safe. I have found the sweet spot about 2.7lbs, nice and crisp
