As per the title id like something with a bit gas , Though about 284 but with the longer 7mm bullets it hasn't the mag length . Would 7mm WSM or Saum be a better option ? Or should i just sell it and look for a 280. Your thought please .

What rifle? Action length will dictate your viable choices to a degree. A t3 with it's long action is pretty versatile.
That said my 7mm08 isn't that far behind my 280 either.... RL17+150 ELDX @ 2820fps.... worth playing around with loads to scratch the tinkering itch?
AI it:cool:
How far you going to be shooting ? the one you got will do most within reason easily gas aint everything
Its a remington 700 short action . Most place i hunt the range can be from 10 to out past 500 yards quite often.
Do you reload? @wayno
@Pop Shot might chime in here, he added a long bolt stop and long action magazine with162gr Amax seated right out. Was getting around 2650fps and that load kills very well.
Sell it and buy the Tikka 284 for sale in the buy/sell section. Sweet little setup
The first thing you need to do is to figure out your parameters , distance and ability ( include ability gained by experience ) , a rifle for short distances is not really suitable for long distance . Calibre then suppress / muzzle brake and weight , and then support ( bipod etc ) then reload ? all end up being a compromise. Nothing does everything perfectly its all about what you want ! .
My 19" 284 tikka will deck game at those ranges and further depending on the shooter. All the work is done including load development(150sgk and 154ssts). Check in the buy sell section
If you want a twiddly bit more power then you can fiddle around with a new powder like RL of Vihtavouri or maybe minor case tweak like AI or a bolt stop stretch .
If you want significantly more power then you need a bigger fatter case like the WSM or RemMag. In which case you need a new action and can choose what you like.
I have seen .284 Win done on Remington short actions, but it’s limited as you say.
7-08 AI is said to be a pretty good solution.
I went from 7mm08 to 280 in a tikka I have. I was stepping down in length and recoil from 7RM
there is no better or worse just pick a bullet weight and the speed you want to push it
The 7mm-08 is a versatile calibre. I don’t have a lot of experience with it yet but for years I shot a 7x57 which has the same ballistics & that served me well.
As for 7mm-08 I load for two mates where they shoot 120 gr Sierras which is easy recoil & certainly drops big central north island red stags no problems.
So an option is to drop down in weight of projectile. The 120 gr Sierra has been awesome. Also look at the 120 gr Speer
The 120 gr BT has a thicker copper cup than the 140 gr BT
As mentioned above you could ream out to AI the chamber but you need to think how much additional fps that will give as the cost & hassle can outweigh the result.
It’ll give you a unique rifle but if you sell it... that can make things harder!
If you want a bit more poke, AI it and shoot 150 eldx. Will get you out to 500m easy.
If you go to a magnum caliber (I would chose 7mm saum) you have the extra work of modding the boltface and the almost inevitable feeding issues with the stubby case
7-08.
paint it pink, put hello kitty stickers onto it and wear a rainbow t-shirt :P
May as well rechambered in 284win as AI. Cost is similar and end up with more poke without fire forming. Wyatt box gives a bit more mag length and all good
I have a Rem mod 7 in Saum coming up for sale shortly 2 barrels 7mm and 30 cal.
Thanks for the heads up nor-west but i find the model 7 to small for me . I guess my question should be to anyone out there with a model 700 in 284 is what COAL's are you able to get in your rifle running 150 and heavier bullets .I have modified the mag to over 3 inches . Thanks for the replies thus far .
I’m at 3.182” with 162 ELD-X in my T3 based .284 Win with a good bit of mag space remaining. That’s reamed a bit longer than standard and you could run the 162s at 3” I think. That would have more potential than a 7-08 AI, but a Wyatts box would give you all you need and more (as mentioned above).
what length is your barrel? might dictate what you can do with it.
Here,s a article on a short action 284 you might find interesting
I can't remember COAL but I had a winchester short action 284 with modded mag. Had duel load of 150gr sgk mag feed and 150gr eld x single. Change in Poi annoyed me and ended up with 160gr speer btsp mag feed shooting well
Just load 162eldms in your 708 to mag length and see how fast you can push it. Unsure best powder option but in shorter 708s I have always used 2206h however full length barrel maybe better with 2208 or 2209. Over 2500 will be good a wee way out and not too fast to have blowups at closer range
@Seventenths do you think you can fit a useful amount more powder in by using a shorter bullet like the 120gr ?
or a stumpy less pointed bullet that you can seat further out ?
I settled on a 120 gr for giving more speed, flatter trajectory out of 18 inch barreled 7mm-08’s friends & I have.
None of us have been disappointed with the 120 gr Sierra!
There’s also a noticeable difference in recoil from 140 to 120 which is ideal for my kids and for anyone for that matter who could potentially develop a flinch as I know I did when younger shooting my 7x57 with 139 gr Hornady’s
As for more powder... we use 43 gr AR2206H with superb accuracy out of T3’s & I’m playing around with my Kimber a bit more so watch this space.
I don’t think we can seat them out any further due to the concave of the projectile but PM me & I’ll flick some projectiles to you in the post to try out for yourself!
120s will start out faster bro but won't carry the energy downrange as well.
Put one on the deck today at 425 yards using said load.
Fair enough, good one
Picked up some 150 eld's so ill see how they go before i do anything rash. Wonder why the 284 hasnt been done as factory gun as it seems to be popular these days ? Good job on the shooting POP Shot.
I AI'd mine bout 5 or 6 years ago when the 284 craze was taking off just to have something different.
From the reading i did at the time, it was said that the 7mm08 had one of the poorer % gain wise over the standard case of the ackley conversions.
I've only run heavies 160, 162, 175's and on average I've gained 100-150 fps over the standard case loads.
If you want something a little different the AI might be of interest but if you're looking purely for velocity gains then 284 or 7saum would be your better bet.
OK I'll bite, what are these amazing Sierra 120 grain projectiles please? :D
Thanks @Tahr, I'm new to latte club. Nosler ballistic tips is it? I might get some of each and have a play.
