NZ made if possible.
NZ made if possible.
I'm guessing something made out of stainless that weighs as much as a axle for your car. MAE?
I had one of those Waitaki Cans for about 6 months and used it pretty heavily for goat culling (1000 rounds in a 6 month period.) I then made a fatal error and sold it (wouldn't mind it back). Was pretty durable and lightweight for the price.
Get the DPT AR can, alloy, but with steel inner for long life.
I only paid $200 for mine on sale (hard to beat that), but send him an email on his website for current price, link on banner above.
From an Non-AR owner I'd suspect a titanium ODL would be No1 choice if you wanted the best you could buy.
Get an MAE 224 St. It is a muzzle forward can. Is full steel, yet only weights 300grs. And is only $250. Great noise reduction
I have compared it to Gunworks max (MAE was lighter and quieter)
DPT (same weight, but a lot more durable)
Hardy ( mae is 1/3 the price)
The oceania defence are lighter and quieter but 3 times the price.
Great customer service too
The 224 ST has been developed for the recreational or commercial shooter where high output and or exposure to harsh environments are a daily occurrence. This model will fit on even the shortest barrel lengths with only a minimum of 0.59" (15mm) barre
Waitaki Engineering or MAE are bothfully stainless steel so will outlast any alloy etc. I have owned both (but overbarel models) and they are both high quality.
Though the DPT with steel inner that dogmatix mentioned sounds interesting
I got one of the Waitaki cans - I really wanted to get one of the ODL titanium cans but I couldn't quite justify the extra $$$ (I tried pretty hard though!) at the time. Pretty happy with the little Waitaki can, price is good, its pretty small and reasonably effective.
DPT AR ?

google is my friend,
DPT Machinists - DPT Machinists
If you intend dumping mags then look at Waitaki, NEA Steel suppressors or ODL, Dan Hardy Titanium.
Otherwise DPT looks to be the best choice.
ODL is NZs premium suppressor with the only published results.
I've used the waitaki cans, would certainly recommend them to go the distance.
Greystone make a nice solid Can... very quiet too.

The Dpt can is $350 iv put over 3000 rounds thru mine and it's still holding up fine, and being modular you can inspect that first baffle and replace it if needed if your on a budget id look no further.
If your not on a budget look at the ODL titanium can, one of the chaps that uses my range puts thru 2000 rounds plus with an 11 inch AR... He does this per week!!!! No issues although it's changed color quite considerably.
This is a 16 inch with some run of the mill loads... Suppressors need to put up with a huge amount of pressure and heat it's a wonder they last as long as they do!

big fan of the gunworks maximus on the AR
Waitaki is great value and does all you want.
Dont think DPT does the AR suppresors with inserts anymore as they were too fidley and not cost effective......at least that was the case a couple of months ago when I called him.
Go ODL if your rich
@Rushy
Sucks walking around with ear muffs! :D
I have been looking around and cant find any reviews using proper sound equipment and a true experimental setup to say which can does the best job.
So it looks like about $300 ish for probably OK units.
Strongly tempted to go buy a sound meter and go test some.
sound meter - Free Shipping - DX
Maybe if a few ppl near Kaitoke/Wellington want to come along with their unit(s) we can run some tests.
Your welcome to come to my range. I also have a far better sound meter than that you can use.
Can you get ASE Ultra jet-z compacts here? They take a fair bit of abuse.
its open on weekends though
You would need to spend more than $300 for a sound meter capable of measuring suppressor performance. You would be looking in the thousands.
There is a video in the planning stages that will compare NZ suppressors with laboratory grade equipment. The test will be a first of its kind comparing all suppressors in a controlled environment on a single gun. It will finally put to rest all the conjecture about which suppressor is best. Best bang for buck will be interesting ;)
While yes I agree a cheap $70 meter isnt going to have the response time and spectrum of one costing 000's such a unit is going to give an idea. More of an idea than the diddly there is at the moment anyway.
Also not just a single gun, the same ammo (it would be interesting to see if similar ammo varies much between brands) but independently tested.
There seem to be 4 or 5 supressors all around $250~300 mark. Some at $500, so yes bang per $, will the $500 units be x2 as quiet as the $250?
Interesting to read some of the marketing stuff about how much design has gone into "my unit"
hmmmm, anyway something for next year.
I'm on the lookout for an AR10 can as well.
5/8 x 24 thread options seem to be Hardy ($ ouch) and the heavier ASE (cheaper by $140).
This DPT has had over 2500 rounds thru it on this 16 inch .308 $350.00 can't complain I blew up two $500 plus units at sub 1000 rnds before trying the DPT
I'm not saying it's the best, but at 2500 rnds and counting I feel like I've got my $ worth already :D

I have had no problems gen 3
You might as well save your money and use a phone app. It will be equally useless. The problem is that most meters are not set up to test very fast pulses. As such you end up measuring the sound level after the shot impulse is long gone (by shot timelines).
The meter needs to be able to test down to 20 microseconds (.00002) and most will not get down to 20 milliseconds (.02). Peak pulse is around 5 milliseconds (.005).
Let us know when you blow the whistle on that one!
Some of us have already done the tests and know the results, so will be interesting to see what gets published and how accurate the reported results are. How about an endurance/longevity test?
I know one thing for sure, there are going to be a few unhappy campers out there.
Does 'bang for your buck' actually mean 'you get what you pay for'? :yaeh am not durnk: lol... I'll sit that one out. Where's the popcorn...?
Please publish the results so everyone can see them. Who did you have peer review your work?Quote:
