What are you thoughts for my new rifle project.

Hi guys, have just purchased a Tikka t3 .270 for a bit of a project (cheaper to keep me entertained on one gun than buy more)

What are you opinions on bell and carlson stocks? what accuracy improvements if any do you get?

Also seen a few people have the top of their receivers milled, has anybody on here had this done to theirs?

Finally I have worked a deal for a Hardy can through a mate. It has to be a hardy but can't decided if the standard model is fine or to go for the stealth? slightly longer and heavier but maybe more noise reduction?

Any advice would be great. Most of this stuff doesn't need to be done, but hell why not give it a go.
Im putting my z5 swarovski on top using a greystone rail and leupold rings and fluting the bolt too.

Don't shorten your 270s barrel. Buy some ear plugs.

I wouldn't bother personal with a b&c stock. a bit heavier than standard and they don't make the gun shoot more accurately, but by all means get one cause they look good. you might be better off spending the extra money on a set of talley rings and epoxying them to the action and the rest on a decent scope.

why does the suppressor have to be a hardy, id be talking to mr dpt :)

as for receiver milling I can only assume this would be for weight loss and or ease of single loading

The BC stock would be last on the list too. Def want to put the suppressor on it to take the bark out of it. as for the hardy, A friend of a friend who's auntys friend shagged some guys step brothers mother. One of those situations. Anyway he has a couple he can free up to put on mine.:thumbsup: Dpt was on my mind too. Don't need to spend too much more on a scope, already spent a pretty penny on my swarovski z5. As for milling, it must just be a weight saving operation, anyway a rail will be on top so that limits the ability to top load regardless.

i completely disagree re b an c and believe the priorities are wrong

i have upgraded 2 of my rifles with b&c and they are much better than the standard.

I have just finished first steps of my Tikka .270 modification

B&C stock - much better, stiffer and no give around recoil lug, shoots firm of bipod small cost and real nice finish
Sako optilock rings - spend the money dont fuck around with the other stuff, these are built specifically for the job and hold like shit to a blanket.
Alutek Bottom metal and bolt shroud - Eh this one is just because the plastic was removed no real advantage but great parts and finishes it nicely
Suppressor - Get a can but go for a small can, the durillium from Gworks is really good, for the .270 its really just the loud crack (which is significant) you need to dampen so small suppressor will be fine. i did not shorten my barrel, this dampening of the crack helps mask direction of the shot which is important when firing at multiple targets
Scope - go for a good one however as its a .270 a better scope less zoom is better than a high zoom average scope 14 power is ideal as max zoom but make sure you have a 50mm obj

Next steps im currently talking with GWorks

Fluting - barrel and bolt, really just for porno factor as it adds nothing
Shorten barrel - too long with suppressor, feels like a javlin, and for the .270 a slight loss in speed means jack shit
trigger work - standard issue

can post pic if you require

a poorly chosen rail and ring combo will have your scope sitting high and then to balance this work on cheek position is important, dont rush it and make sure you try before you buy. optilocks come suited to the rifle.

If your definitely putting a cannon id chop to 20inch. First timers freak out and say oh I can do it later but it never happens and they are stuck with an unwieldy poor balanced pos. Ive had plenty.

So the set up will be:
Tikka t3 270 with:
Bell and carlson stock
hardy supressor (after looking at barrel length plus suppressor today ill have to cut a bit off as a shoot out of my truck a lot)
optilock rings
swarovski Z5 5-25x52 with ballistic turret (again i know i don't need that mag but got it dirt cheap in quick sale, don't have to use it all, plus it made my vx6 look rather average)

optilocs are great rings, I run them on my tikka

I probably would go with talley lightweights next time round tho. optis are nicer, but far more expensive and heaver

mcche171 - great setup out of the blocks in my opinion it wont disappoint.

Re weight - unless you give it a full weight loss program 1) mill action 2) Flute Bolt 3) Flute Barrel then lighten rings the weight savings wont even register and even then pretty muh.......

Wow scope is porno however id bust a nut to get my hands on one of those!!!! high power ok as long as you have an option of 6x or less.

Climbing the hill and blowing ya ass out - 200gms aint gunna prevent that from happening.

cheers, I'm not too worried about the weight on this one. I mean I'm probably carrying an extra 20kg so not worried about a few 100gs on the rifle.
Yeh i love the scope. Went in to buy another vx6 and the guy said have you ever looked through one of these. Now to say i was ruined from that point is an under statement. I get an extra 10 minutes on the swarovski over my vx6 at dark.

Who are you sourcing your B&C through?

dead eye dicks seem to have them. pretty steep though ($600) does anyone know a cheaper alternative?

I always considered leupolds the safe bet and have more than my fair share of them-but my then boss lent me a rifle with a Swarovski on it and my bank account has never been the same since.

Yep. its even worse when the girl friend finds the receipt and finally figures out what sort of coin you spend on guns.

just done all that to mine dtp suppressor bell and carlson stock and cut down to 17" still shoot mean and i realy like the stock its a 280ai lol

Good to hear buzzman. getting excited for it all now. picking up the rifle tomorrow and scope is already set to go. but turn around for suppressor etc will be a week or two.
also does anybody know if you have to send your bolt up with the rifle when it is being suppressed? i want to send it off to be fluted at the same time.

Brownells might work out cheaper for them, guys who import parts on here might help out with the total to door price ive been looking at getting one of these on mywinchester.CARBELITE® RIFLE STOCK | Brownells

Midway has the stock i want and is $290US so about $340 nz. has anyone imported a stock and know about gst at our end etc?

$600 really not that bad considering the alternatives

The B&C Medalist stock has been advertised numerous times at $500, you should be able to get one in NZ new at that price.

Not sure what your implying @Neckshot but full length rifle stocks are definitely a no no, i gave a hogue up in LAX in 2011 for my winchester $200. Took me another 12 months to get a hogue through gun city $400, that wore out then 18 months for HS precision $750 through Asia Pacific which i on sold as too much of a target shooters stock, then another 12 months to get a B&C for the Winny $500 which has been mean.

Tikka are available now at but as the demand soaks up the fat waiting times could become LONG. Pay the $500-$600

@Neckshot you now see why im so keen to hear further detail on carrying small items through ie AR15 but stock, cheap small and plastic ($70 vs $400 NZ), but hard to gauge the EXACT rules and risky in customs. Often offshore purchases just turn into a cock up and as i travel through often enough a bit of clarification can help me no end.

I just put a bid on that one of trademe for 500. couldn't be bothered looking overseas anyway to be honest but was worth a look. I contacted them today and Jas just quoted me 600.

Hi guys. Very quickly, all has been sorted but now i need to decide weather or not to shorten the barrel when it comes to getting it suppressed. Currently is 22" and has been proposed that it gets cut down to 20".
My shooting is within 500m.

thoughts?

I'd leave original if it were me mate.
Please post photos of stock when done as I am looking at restocking my sako 75 in 270.

Yep its cut. I shoot out of my truck a bit too on a mates farm. So having a long rifle will be a pain in the arse

B&C stocks are okay if you have larger hands. Their pistol grip is quite chubby. They definitely don't suit my girly hands and I had to return the one I ordered online some years back because it felt like a club. Apart from that they seem well made.
