Hi team, me and my mate are looking at getting a chrony.
Budget up to 7 hundy.
What should we be looking at?
This one seems the bizo?

Oehler or Magnetospeed, personally I would go with Magnetospeed for ease of use
Kiwigreg should have comments about both :)
Sweet cheers EBF
One thing is we shoot from various uneven surfaces so a pretty adaptable stand/ tripod system would be good.
Looking forward to getting some loads measured :D
Puffin posted a sweet mod to make a $ 200 F1 shooting chrony more consistent, worth looking at.
Don't know anything about the magneto speed but the Ohler would be the top of the line optical sensor chrony.

This is interesting
Review Comparison , Oehler 35, Magneto Speed, and Super Chrono
Mate and I have each just gone MagnetoSpeed. He got sick of his 35P not always triggering (bright sunny days, and some types projectiles) and I with a CED with IR screens - much the same issues. Extremely pleased with the MagnetoSpeed.
Is the magneto speed the barrel mounted one? Wouldn't the muzzle blast fuck them up??
you"may" have to shoot for speeds and groups separately with a weight hanging on the end of the barrel for speed readings.
The reality is a chrony only gives you enough information to get started.
All other data should be collected by verification shooting.
Look at the vortex optics website and watch their verification videos as it will get you on the right track
I have a 35p and a pro chrono.
I taped my pro chrono to the 35 in between the first two sensors and they were on average 4fps different in their reading.
Hence the 35 stays home as a bit more time to set up than the pro chrono
How do you verify it?
How do you get a speed from shooting the paper?
The size of the hole
the local nra full bore range has electronic targets now. it gives the speed at the target, say 600 yards away.
just saying, I thought it was pretty cool.
Yup bully, have a look at Silver Mountain targets, those are the ones we use.
Not cheap, but awesome to get terminal velocity at longer ranges.
yeah, the same ones then.
Not really, the 2 groups (top group 4 shots, bottom group 2 shots) were shot with the MagnetoSpeed attached. Generally accepted that the bullet will move away from the sensor and is in most cases the sensor is at 6 o'clock the elevation will be affected. The sensor would be just as happy mounted 3 or 9 o'clock and 12 for that matter (shooter may not be happy).
May affect thinner barrels perhaps. The thinnest I have used it on was my CZ Varmint 223 and accuracy was vg and no different to the groups I get without the sensor mounted.
I have found some scorching on the sensor arm but not on the sensors themselves. The scorching is cosmetic only and no biggie unless you get anal about such things.

I did say "may"
I was thinking specifically of pencil thin long magnum barrels like the new Kimbers and rems where it "may" affect the way the barrel whips as its fired.
The Magneto speed is much easier to use and unaffected by wind and weather, altogether a much more practical choice than any of the ones with screens. I wouldn't go back to screens again, and, as has been pointed out, it's only a good starting point so not much point putting too much money into it. My 2cents worth ;-)
I should have added 'and barrel diameter' to the unaffected bit.. .
They use two electro magnetic sensors, measuring the interruption of the EM fields by the metallic bullet. That's why they are unaffected by environmentals.
I used mine for the first time the time the other day. I've never used a chronograph before, it was certainly as easy to use and reliable as advertised. As for the POI change I couldn't really answer, in my case as the rifle is new to me and not a tack driver. I'm accepting that if need be, I'll run speeds separate from any groups. I don't really shoot any groups anyway.
I did have to send the first one back as the LED display was buggered on arrival. Also, I hadn't considered the erosion on the bayonet from the muzzle blast. The wear from a single session wasn't out of this world, but hopefully was part of the design consideration.
Just wrap 2 layers of electrical around the forward end of the curved section. I think it is only a cosmetic issue myself.
Good idea, I'll give that a whirl next time.
I agree with it being minor and cosmetic.
Also been using mine a lot lately for 22RF ammo tests. (unfortunately my EM332 loves the expensive SK Subs!) The MS detects lead bullets quite happily as well. You just need to change the bullet type to "slug" and take care to get the gap between the sensor and the bullet path to a minimum and away it goes.
