    what about putting a patch down it and feeling for loose sections ? might at least give you an idea of if and where the barrel may be bulged ?
    if it's near enough to the muzzle chopping and re crowning could be an option ?

    That's fine in a medium or big bore
    But a .17 is so small you wouldn't feel the tiny variation that's all it takes to upset them

    What if you pulled a bullet and pushed it through in front of a rod. Would you feel anything then?

    You can do it with a .177 air rifle pellet, don't think I'd risk it with a jacketed bullet.
