Who's seen a rimfire do this before

2nd hand purchased 17hmr shooting Hornady 17gr Vmax

Started sighting in at 30 yards, then when things seemed to be a little odd I moved even closer to just 12 yards! Yes that 3 shot group was shot at 12 yards LoL

I thought the impacts sounded a bit different. And the bullet holes didn't look right thru the scope.

Went up to look at the target and couldn't believe what I was seeing!

It's really a 22 HMR and you were using the wrong caliber ammo

Yeah, but some idiot had used it for fishing and tried to point blank the fish by putting the muzzle on them. It flared the barrel and the muzzle and bulged it so the barrel looked like a roof roller for corrugated iron. I dunno how it didn't kill the clown to be honest, it was well stuffed. One of the asian knockoffs of a BRNO design I think, not stirling but a similar style? Either way something isn't right with that thing, I wouldn't even try to stick anything else down it until the headspace and barrel state are checked.

I've seen this on an old 17 Remington I had.
The hypothesis the gunsmith and I came up with was that the rifling at the end of the barrel was on a 'loose' spot that only gave contact with one side of the bullet from one side of the barrel.
The .17 bullet being so light was then exiting at an angle that made aerodynamics unstable.

That was his and my idea anyway. He ended up cutting 2" off the barrel and recrowning which got it shooting correctly.

As it's a .17, you won't get a borescope up it, well at least any I've ever seen. Rabbits at 50 are definitely safe :)

It looks to me that even shortening and re crowning the barrel might be a waste of time after a waste of money
So don't waste any more time or money in it

And I note that was at 12 yards through a scope
I test plenty of vintage rifle barrels that look more like shotguns and have bulges and rings in the bore that shoot better than that at 50 yards with open sights and old eyes

There's a lot of reasons why this barrel shoots so badly and I suspect they are all in play with this one

what about putting a patch down it and feeling for loose sections ? might at least give you an idea of if and where the barrel may be bulged ?
if it's near enough to the muzzle chopping and re crowning could be an option ?

That's fine in a medium or big bore
But a .17 is so small you wouldn't feel the tiny variation that's all it takes to upset them

Give it a good clean first , being such a small calibre , small things can have much bigger consequences. Being secondhand you do not know what has been done to it?.

They are caught up in the SS109 rumour ;)

I have seen an old 303 do that before and it was f----d

There is a ready market for a rifle with this type of accuracy at shooting gallery sideshows

You are all looking at the problem wrong. There is nothing wrong with the gun, the problem is the target paper - you have it facing the wrong way!

Rotate the paper 90deg on its vertical axis so that the bullets can enter the paper point on in stead of sideways. Problem solved.

Looks very much like clipping - suppressor strike. Was GW using one?

Have seen barrels with intermittent rifling i.e. slug the barrel by pushing say the 22LR projectile down it and feeling the tight and loose sections of rifling. But have never seen anything that would cause rounds to perform like that straight out of barrel at 12 meters. Wooo! Might be why it was a secondhand rifle :)

Pffft - first ive heard of a 2nd hand rifle shooting like that.....according to trademe they ALL shoot 1/2 moa out to 1000yds as long as the seller does thier part:ORLY::thumbsup:

If you try to put a positive spin on it then it could be a bad case of borer in the wood which is coming through the paper and you are completely missing the target in which case the riffle is all good.

What if you pulled a bullet and pushed it through in front of a rod. Would you feel anything then?

You can do it with a .177 air rifle pellet, don't think I'd risk it with a jacketed bullet.

I'd give it a good clean with foaming bore cleaner and really inspect it. If it's not bulged and you can usually feel it with a brush then I'm picking flared or damaged muzzle, stuffed headspace which is sticking the pill in sideways and it's coming out rooted, or some version of bulges at the critical point just behind the muzzle. If it's none of that then you might need to be looking at casting up .175 bullets.

Can you recover a pill? Wet phone books... That will tell you a lot about the engraving of the rifling, and if there ain't any...

An update on this.

I've had enough to do with rifles to come to the conclusion very quickly that I believe that there's nothing that will make this any better.

I emailed the seller last night and advised him of the issue. Told him its not in any way fit for purpose and it needs to be returned to him for a full refund.

He has replied this morning, and is being really good about it and has actually made a full refund already, and is arranging to have it sent back.

Cannot ask for any more. Sounds like he has traded it on another rifle and he's been tucked.

I've got an old ( 1913 ?) Winchester pump action 22 that does that, but usually after 25m. Has no rifling at all so bullets tumble like a bastard.

if its that bad.....getting someone to counterbore the muzzle MIGHT work,certainly got stuff all to loose..basically what you doing is moving muzzle back by an inch cleaning up the egdes of it and hiding it internally.....

Shame the rifle has been returned etc, was looking forward to finding out what the problem is.

I stand by my $50 offer. will take it from the new guy too.

My knackered 22 was my granddads and looking down the bore there is basically no rifling left. I do like the exposed hammer though. Never thought you could rebore etc... Could be worth it.
