Thread: Why does everyone seem to be getting out of 6.5x47L?

the last coupple of years a lot if members on here built 6.5x47L rifles.... but now all those members seem to be selling up and getting out of the cal
whats the reasons behind this? is it to expencive to run or the performance not as good as everyone was raveing about etc etc
interested to know as its one if the 3 or 4 if been looking at for a possable switch

Ive never had a 6.5x47L, i do have a 260 rem, and from what i can see, if you already have a 260 rem i cant really see any great benefit in going to a 6.5x47L, apart from the case looks cool

I think initially guys were very impressed by the performance talked about on the internet in a US shooting competitions.

But they have fairly long barrels, not the 18-20" Kiwi Hunting barrels which really robs their performance with the heavier projectiles.

Back then Lapua 260 brass wasn't around so I guess guys thought that was a good reason to go to 6.5x47

Also the 260 gets pretty long for a SA magazine with the 140s seated out to get the most from the case.

Of course I could be completely wrong

i load muz's ammo for him and I think the main reason for him considering changing from 260 is the fact that you have to seat the bullets so deep like stupid deep to fit them in the mag his abolt unless you use short stubbie bricks something like a 6.5creedmoor or 6.5x47 (they are the two he's mentioned to me) are shorter case and there fore more room for a decent bullet upfront
I think he has other reasons aswell though

I have had 2 6.5x47. 1 was a Barnard 07 with a 28" barrel, the other a lightweight model 7. The Barnard in particular was awesomely accurate and they fitted easily into the 2.8" mags. I don't have 1 now, but selling them had nothing to do with getting out of the round. The fact that blaser now chambers the round in the R8 has me tempted to get another. If I didn't already have a 6XC and 6.5 x 55 that is...

Only reason I changed was cos I bought a lighter factory rifle and Sako don't chamber 6.5x47L. It works well including out of short barrels and I would consider it when I have to replace my .260 barrel because it fits the mag a little better than .260 with long 140s

I's guess folk liked that you could get Lapua brass for it and that it was new and sexy.
Now that you can get 260 Lapua brass and get a bit more performance out of a similar cartridge and it comes in many factory rifles, there is less appeal for it.

I have no idea what the popularity is like in the US but you have 4 cartridges that do more or less the same thing (6.5x55, 260Rem, 6.5x47, 6.5 Creedmore), I can see one or more dying off and it's likely to be the ones with the least factory backing.

creedmore and x47 seem to go better in short magazines, so say the yanks which also claim short actions are heavier than long actions, maybe but fuck all in reality.

x47 uses a small primer pocket so arguably stronger case head

Don't worry about the small primer if you want performance.

The standard size magnum primer gave me more performance than any of the smaller ones when looking for velocity in a long barrel 7-08 & standard length 308.

The small primer may give better consistency as lower velocities ?

For me if I was to go down the 6.5mm case road I would go for the 260, more so now that Lapua make brass for it. The 6.5x47L did look good a few years back when the guys in the USA were winning comps and talking them up and probably is ok for shot targets, but flinging 47L cases into the scrub can be rather expensive in NZ.

I was under the impression that the advantage of the small primer was that the base of the case had more brass due to the nsmaller primer and therefore was less likely to stretch and allow higher pressures...but as the wife says I'm usually wrong!

I went with the 6.5 creedmoor in a F-class/ long range rig. First because the round was new and sexy, second because nobody had one at the time and third because 260lapua case were not available at the time.
I still have it, still love it, although I don't take her out as often as I should:-)

Because everyone realized that a 308 does the same thing?
