Thread: Win M70 Featherweight value?

Hey lads,

I’ve got the opportunity to take ownership of my older cousins featherweight .308, now that he’s gone to the dark side and bought a Tikka. It was the first centrefire he bought when he was 18, around 30 years ago. We hunted together for many years, and I want to ‘keep it in the family’ so to speak.

He has no idea what it’s worth, and I want to give him a reasonable price for it. It’ll be really well used, and possibly a bit rough here and there. Like I say he’s hunted hard with it for 3 decades. Don’t have any photos unfortunately…..

What’s the rough price bracket for an early 90’s wood/blue featherweight these days?

Your going to have to get it in your hands, disassemble, clean and assess

Had one here over Xmas that was well used, had absolutely no rifling for the last 4 or 5 inches (where the rain sits when carried barrel vertical)

rough $700-900 -- tidy good barrell $1000 -$1200 well thats what I would pay

I have one in .270 that I keep threatening to sell, but can't bring myself to do it. My one is also my first rifle, very purdy to look at, and just a bloody pleasure to carry round.

Based on a couple of years of "Winchester Model 70" TradeMe watchlists, Barry the Hunter is bang on. Based on the description, probably the lower end of that range... and it seems to be a tough market at the moment, so you might even be doing your mate a favour at that price. Just my observations - happy to stand corrected.

I love my 270W featherweight. Just last year I refinished the stock with a tough clear, recut the checkering and tru oiled the checkering. full ceracote in midnight blue. new 4-12x40 Leupold scope.

Hey Nick, If its a New Haven model, in good usable condition, shouldn't be more than 6-700 tops in excellent condition. I bought a .270 at Teds auction last year on an impulse buy for 400 and sold it for 500. It was tidy but needed the buttpad replaced.
If yours is 'well used' I would offer 500.

Yes it's a tough market at present, I have a very nice 243 carbine and wouldn't let it go under 1500 but it is in damn good nick.. the oldie are the tomorros goodies.

Hey thanks, pretty much what I was thinking myself, somewhere around the $500-900 mark depending on how it’s been treated.

I’m not too fussed about the price tonne completely honest, there is an element of sentimentality and nostalgia with this one. It was the first ‘big’ gun I ever fired….

Just bought a youth version .243 model 70 for $400 from the forum,needed a little tlc but a good shooter.
