Winchester 1892 hammer won’t cock back with lever after disassembly

Couldn’t see a particular sub forum that made sense to post in so will try here, as there wasn’t a “I’m dumb and need help section” :O_O:
As the title suggests, after partially disassembling my 1892 with the intent to clean the barrel and inspect general condition the gun won’t cock with the lever when the butt stock is on, works fine without the butt stock and worked fine before I opened it, with the butt stock on the bolt doesn’t push the hammer far enough down, I can pull the hammer back and it’ll lock correctly, another symptom is that the screw going through both tangs and the butt stock doesn’t grab the threads unless a lot of downward pressure is applied, this to me indicates that something miss aligned but didn’t find anything obvious.

I did try to remove the main spring on the lower tang, but the screw was in there extremely tight and didn’t budge, after a little mangling I decided to just clean the barrel via the muzzle, this potentially is where I’ve messed something up?

Thinking I’ve missed something stupid but after a few hours of trying to get it to work I figure it’s time for help.

Thanks for the videos BSA, was actually following the first one before getting to the stuck main spring screw, pretty much all that came off the gun today was the forend, mag tube, and butt stock,
Ive been fiddling with it and as soon as the butt stock applies pressure to the tang, the bolt no longer pushes the hammer down enough, if I put my hand on top the bolt pushing downward I can get the hammer to lock back,

But what confuses me the most is that it worked fine before taking the butt stock off.

Intriguing, a mate of mine said they can be a bit tricky to re-assemble but I've never taken mine apart, I just clean, oil, shoot.

Giving that the stock is affecting it.....sounds like the hammer spring is not right. I will PM you a PDF schematic.

The first rule is you dont take a Winchester 92 apart unless you drop it in the ocean. You will have to take it apart again and put it back together once more, you have not assembled it right. I have done it a couple of times and I think it will be the mainspring not sitting right.
I know this is not particularly helpful. But its not an easy rifle to do and it was a while back I cant remember all of it.

everything lines up without issue, I cant for the life of me figure out how the stock is stopping the mechanism from working, I've pushed the tangs apart with my hands attempting to replicate the issue to no avail,
waynesworld is sending me a parts diagram, with the thought that the sear may be worn and the new oil is enough to stop it engaging via bolt,

Will have to get jiggy with the main spring screw, have some penetrating oil on the way and will probably grab a set of impact screw drivers.

Sounds a bit weird.
If everything is working with the stock removed then something you uave played with is touching the wood.
Had my rossi 92 completely in bits severalbyears back to put a spring kit in it and don't recall any major issues

definitely a bit weird, I had thoughts about the stock putting pressure on the tangs but I'm unable to replicate the issue pushing the tangs apart or back together, I'll take the mag tube back off and see if that makes a difference, at this rate I'll just have to have to shoot it from the tangs :D

It is indeed very similar,

I've got it apart again, the mag tube and forend doesn't change change anything although I didn't think it would, with the buttstock on the bolt doesn't push the hammer down enough, but with the buttstock off it pushes it down with plenty of extra push, so somehow the buttstock is interfering there, I can't see how the buttstock would go on any way other than how it does, having the tang screw in doesn't change anything,

Im thinking it may be fouling side to side rather than up and down, but I cant see any marking in the wood or on the spring that would indicate that, should figure out a way to mark it so I can see where it rubs, not sure what I'd use, I know carbon from smoke is used for metal surfaces though.

I don't think I have any on hand, think I'll try some of the white ink stuff meant for erasing pen mistakes.

I've given it a bit of a colouring in and it doesn't seem like anything is touching the main spring.

what I did notice while faffing about is that as I put the stock on, the bolt progressively rides higher, eventually getting to the point that its not pushing the hammer down enough, I've got a pic I'll upload of the point where the bolt no longer pushes down enough marked with a while line, bloody strange problem, might end up having to find a smith to take a look, I'm pretty sure I'm not as dumb as this guns making me feel, but theres a chance I'll need to borrow some crayons soon :XD:

Dont laugh, but for checking inletting and where its touching, use red lipstick on the metal.

My Dad used to use lipstick to mark lambs when doing the lambing beat.
Used to buy Dick Millar the chemist in Mangakino old stock.

Didn't have any on hand though, probably would of worked better than the white correction pen I used,

Will be taking the firearm to fssprecision tomorrow so hopefully he can figure out what the issue is, if he finds something I'll definitely update the thread with the answer.

Looks like the issue is sorted thanks to @Fssprecision,
The issue pretty much came down to general wear on the rifle, have had the hammer built up with weld so that it interfaces with the bolt and is working as it should now (along with a deep clean)
seemingly the reason it works with the stock off is that it allows you to squeeze the tangs in and engage the trigger deeper, however with the stock on the tangs are held at their correct distance apart which stops the bolt pushing the hammer down enough to cock it.

Looking forward to having the rifle back in hand and getting some black powder through it.

make sure you clean it extra well when you do that..... great to hear it has been sorted by another of the forum genuine good fellas.
