    Winchester Model 70

    Opinions on the Model 70?

I am looking around for an older gun that is in a fair condition (at least not thrashed and eaten to pieces from rust), hopefully to make it a small project of mine.
Or just wing the whole idea and get myself a Remington 700. Either of the two choices will be in .308 as an all rounder for deer, goats, whoever is not listening to me etc etc...

I guess the questions are, Model 70 or Remington 700? If model 70 would you go for a new or old one?
If anyone has an old model 70 that they want out of their cabinet let me know...

    Petros
    Peace out

model 70s actions come in two forms, the pre 64 as they are called have a controlled round feed action which is nice the very new ones also have gone back to this.

the ones after 1964 were push feed like a rem700 which were not at all a bad action, but are just less sought after

I personally love the control feed, but most of my rifles dont have it and i dont miss it. but its nice and id choose to have it over not.

model 70s were used by the USMC along side the rem700s for their sniper rifles and are IMO just as good, aftermarket parts are avialable but not as plentiful as a rem700.

the only downside in my mind is the old ones which come up cheep are allways buled, and Id prefer stainless
the new model 70s come stainless and look like great guns, and by all reports seem like top rifles.

my father has a post 74 push feed 243 in a long action model 70 and he loves it.

I would go in with an open mind. nothing wrong with a model 70 and nothing wrong with a rem700 pick what comes up at a good price and run with it

I would go for the Model 70 hands down. Normally a few older ones floating around on Trademe.

Stainless is more user friendly. It doesn't corrode as quickly and the discolouring that happens is removable.

    It's only a personal choice.
