Thread: Xbolt rebarrel?

So with all these custom rifles coming up in the buy, sell section of which I cannot afford it got me thinking. I have an xbolt that I have spent far too much on in 7mm mag, but I love it. Question is, in the long run once its shot out can it be rebarreled to 7mm stw or another caliber off that bolt face? Its had a bit of a hard life with reloading before I owned it but its accuracy is mint for the time being so this will be a future endeavour.

I imagine you could re barrel into something like a 7 blaser mag. That’s what I’m thinking of doing to my tikka rem mag.

That's my thoughts, just didn't know if the xbolts are finicky or if I'd have issues.

stw is possible with the bolt face yes

the mag will need to be an inch longer so see if theres enough there or if it will be single feed

you can also just ream your current barrel to 7STW

Gun smiths don't like re-barreling the xbolts. Something to do with them having a very fine thread and being very difficult to get off. Google the topic and you will see.

Maybe more internet rumor than fact, have had barrel's removed from 3 without any drama, two for threading, one to change to a Brux 1:8. Correct tooling is a necessity; like most precision engineering excessive force in place of good technique often leads to disaster.. One well known gunsmith told me he had caused some damage to one when removing the barrel to find the cause being over-length base block attachment screws bottomed out on the barrel tenon. When fitting mounts/bases to x-bolts always check the screw length, Talley's are often over-length on the forward mount, not only has this the potential to cause the problem mentioned above but also to negatively affect accuracy.

If the 7RM barrel is long enough to get the velocity out of it that you want and isnt worn out a simple rechamber would likely not cost more than 200 for the whole service

Opinions. eh. I tried to get one done by a well respected smith and that's what he told me so I left it.

I'd say the only issue is mag length, I dont have a lot of room to spare with my handloads as it is. The barrel has already been taken off so no issues there. Just want to know there's options down the track once the barrel loses accuracy. I've seen a fair bit has been done with the a bolts. Just love the rifle and dont wanna part with it

When i rebarrel my abolt people said not possible fine threads etc some said blued actions were better than ss ones for rebarrel i had my old barrel releif cut
So was easier to remove so less chance of stuffing fine threads
So far so good after a few years

They do have very fine threads but I have seen Dean Maisey do a few of them so could be smith dependent, I know he said they were a pain in the arse but definitely do able,

Who did the work on yours? I've found one gunsmith that is happy to do mine, a couple weren't too enthusiastic about it however

Hes one of the ones that has said it's no problems. He also did my 284 so I have a bit of faith in him
