    Another first..Sambar time (meat hunt)

I have a very strong interest in putting meat in the freezer, kind of like having a woodshed full to the roof, it makes yah feel somewhat wealthy and well ready for whatever may come along.
I knew that Sambar were massive animals, and after and unsuccessful hunt on a mates farm in Rotorua for a Rusa, I had chance to hunt a bit closer to home for a Sambar deer, I called on a mate to ask if I could drop one, he said no problem at all but as long as it was a Hind, he had a few trophy stags but wanted to save them for himself, fair call I thought, I was after meat anyway.
I took the 270 for this mission, I felt a long range shot with something a bit gruntier might be the smart option, once on the property and having glassed some likely spots I soon saw my target, a large hind trotted out the scrub about 170 yards out, she was a big bitch! Lining up on the shoulder I squeezed, she dropped, game over. I didn’t realise just how big and heavy she was until I tried getting to my feet, I honestly have never worked so hard to cart an animal back to the vehicle. The amount of meat boned out was insane, beautiful tasting, very coarse meat though which was interesting.

(I apologise for the blacked out face, there are people here who know who I am, but I prefer to keep some thing's off the internet and social media for work related reasons)

    Good work oneshot.

Have a mate of my sons trying to jack me up a spot on a farm that borders Santoff forest.

    I've never hunted Sambar before.

Be nice to get a hind for the freezer too.

    Cheers
    Pete

Hinds are fairly easy to find, I saw about 8 that day, its the stags that are like ghosts, seriously sneaky bastards, they can make Sika look clumsy.

Well done, if you could carry it then you shot a small one

The larger ones go 480-500 pounds for a hind and 600 pounds for a stag

Your certainly right there, any bigger than that I would have butchered it on the hill.

Yup. My mate brought some meat home from one he just shot last weekend. Its backsteaks were huuugggeee. It was a yearling looked around the size of a red hind in the pic

oh helllllll yes, picture a Horse with short legs and your close to a Sambar stag. They can weigh as much as 1200 pounds, I shit you not.

The appearance and the size of sambar vary widely across their range, which has led to considerable taxonomic confusion in the past; over forty different scientific synonyms have been used for the species. In general, they attain a height of 102 to 160 centimetres (40 to 63 in) at the shoulder and may weigh as much as 546 kg (1,204 lb), though more typically 100 to 350 kg (220 to 770 lb).[2][3] Head and body length varies from 1.62 to 2.7 m (5.3 to 8.9 ft), with a 22 to 35 cm (8.7 to 13.8 in) tail.[4] Individuals belonging to western subspecies tend to be larger than those from the east and females are smaller than males.[5] Among all living cervid species, only the moose and the elk can attain larger sizes

We shot a stag last year and measured the back steaks carefully, 3 inches thick, 9 inches wide, 30 inches long

One back steak did not fit in an oven roasting dish.

    They make great mince
