    ANZAC Day Stag

Deciding that Sika were a tad on the quiet side this year my young sidekick and I decided to head out in search of a Red stag instead.

Running a bit late we set up camp in the evening and had an early night in preparation for the morning.

Wondering up a ridge after day break I stopped at an opening and gave a few roars, quiet as. Five minutes or so passed and we opted to push on. Should have waited longer as a roar sounded across the valley. A mad scramble up the ridge to find another spot to see out from and no sooner had we poked our noses out I spied a stag. Giving a roar he answered back and came charging down. Then proceeded to stand with his body obscured by a bank and roar his head off. Fair to say the young fulla was a bit excited. Another roar and he started heading up towards us. And that was that. One happy lad!

We carried on hunting and spotted another 5 deer for the morning including a stag. They were all either in difficult locations or in the case of the stag, a bit small to shoot.

    Some noodles for lunch.

    Followed by an afternoon hunt.

A hind pinned us down and there was no way of progressing any further without spooking her so with daylight waning, Spence opted to take her.
Barren hind in surprisingly good condition for the area.

Morning hunt produced nothing so it was a quick roast of some marshmallows and head on out to be back for his 9th birthday the following day.

Successful trip and another couple of animals to add to his tally chart.

Made a short video of our adventure.
