Great story. When hunting with the young fella, I always try and disguise the much needed breathers with the need to stop and get the binos out.

Great effort.... and good to know that the 77grainers work in a S&L
Created a memory he'll cherish forever. Best thing about being a dad!
Nothing like some type 2 fun on a hunt. Well done.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.
Some post hunt info, the S& L with Sightron held zero despite getting a hell of a beating, in the dark I fell over backwards, sideways and all other variations, about 20 times. Sam carried it for a while when he was in front (in the dark) and used it as a poker, scrub pusher, walking stick and several other things I'd never do with a rifle. So that's pleasing, it's easily the hardest I've ever treated one of my rifles.
The 77 TMK had a difficult job. The stag was directly below, extremely steep, maybe 30-40 degrees of slope. The stag was lying down broadside on. There was a rock about 200x200mm right on his shoulder. So there was only a fairly high shot on offer, and the projectile left a neat hole in one backsteak. The 77 didn't exit and I didn't check the lungs but it sure hit some really big blood vessels because when I drooped the guts out I cut the diaphragm and there were litres and litres of blood.
well done that man, either of you wont forget that.
Great going both you, always nice to get your first deer down and it turned into an epic hunt. Well done.
Restraint is the better part of dignity. Don't justify getting even. Do not do unto others as they do unto you if it will cause harm.
Definitely a hard and well earned stag, congrats to Sam.
Congratulations Sam, enjoyed the read. Cheers
If you're heading up Central ways for a hunt then let me know.
I need the exercise walking up hills carrying stuff, and can provide many useful facts about rocks.
Geology is mostly physics slowed down, with a couple of trees stuck in it.
