Great Day Out
The weather the last few days had been crap but Saturday looked like it was on the improve. Beeman and I had up to our regular haunt for a hunt on a cold clear dawn.
Within half an hour of daylight I had seen three deer out on the edge of a clear cut. The wind was strong and the deer moved back into the large pines within three or four minutes of coming out. I decided to close the 400 yard gap and quickly crossed the road and got up on a ridge at about 200 yards from the last place I had seen them and waited for the sun to rise with the hope they would return to warm up a little. After about 3/4 hour a spiker came wandering out and fell victim to the 30 06.
I found the deer down the face in the large pines and gutted then went to find Beeman to give me a hand to drag him out. Within the hour we had him back at the truck and were enjoying a nice brew.
We decided to check another spot on the way out as the wind had dropped little and the sun was shinning nicely. As we drove along a clear cut we noticed fresh sign and as we came into the next gully two redskins erupted from there beds on the clear cut about a 100 yards from the truck, it was 10 am. I yelled to Beeman to grab his rifle and then lined a up on a fast moving deer and fired, dropping it on the spot. In the mean time Beeman was out of the truck following the other deer which stopped for a look back and paid for its wrong move with it's life.
His shot was a hard one, shooting one handed resting on the box on the back of the truck,Attachment 68638Attachment 68639Attachment 68640Attachment 68641 while the other had shielded the sun from the lens of the scope.
We only had to drag the animals about 200 yards to get them back to the truck which was good for a couple of old fellas.
We kept the smaller deer for our freezers and the other two are going to some friends freezers.
Really pleased with the 3006, so far three shots at deer and three deer down all with Noslar 180gr BT, they sure do knock them down.
Well that was our Great Day Out and no doubt we will be at it again soon.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting.

Good work
Nothing wrong with a 30-06 when it comes to knocking deer over that's for sure.
Cheers

Thanks for the comments, we were very lucky with all three as the distance from roads was about 200 yds on the two and the spiker may have been 300 yds.
Have used the 3006 a lot over the years back when we sold deer the weapon of choice was a Browning BAR which was accurate, fast and reliable but a bit heavy, after selling all my BAR's I went back to bolt action and magnum calibers but always had a 3006 in the cabinet. So recently I upgraded to the Ruger and like it a lot as it's only 71/2 pound all up so nice to carry and it packs a punch.
Personally I like them better than 308 as they work well with the 180 gr bullets which gives them there punch. Still like me magnums though!!

Great set of photo's!
My Missus finally got to see a picture of "Cut over" in a Forestry block. There isn't really a term for that over here.
3006 kills everything well.
