A hunt with Jed
Ive been taking Jed out the last few weeks on some day hunts. A few weeks ago we got a nice little pig. It was a bit lucky though. We were coming across a heap of fresh sign and I said to my son that I wouldnt be surprised if we got one. Sure enough, soon Jed stopped. There was a pig in front of us. It looked like a good sized one. Unfortunately Jed started growling and then barked. The pig got up and ran off. Fuck!!
He hadnt seen pigs beforeso I guess it was no surprise he reacted the way he did. Soon after we caught up with some more. I saw one off to my right on a small clearing. Fortunately Jed hadnt seen it. I got him in behind and shot the pig. It was smaller than the one that got away but a nice eating size. It was the first time Jed had seen a pig up close so it will be interesting to see how he reacts next time he sees one.
Next weekend it was just me and the dog. we hunted all day and found some nice country. Jed has a habit of getting a bit too far when he has a nose full of scent. He is getting better but still needs to be told at times.
We were coming down a ridge and Jed started to get keen and disappeared out of sight. When he came back I gave him a growling. A short time later we came over the ridge and 4 deer started running. I had no chance of a shot. They must have heard me growling the dog. Fuck!!
Jed tracked the deer accross the creek and stopped in front of a patch of lawyer and wineberry. I should have paid more attention because there were 2 deer in there. I caught a glimpse as they disappeared through the bush.
Today I went for another look with the dog. We were in more or less the same area. I came across a freshly killed deer carcasse and decided to move away to a hopefully less disturbed area. Jed got up to his old tricks again and I had to give him a telling off. (much more quietly this time:D) He got the message and was hunting well. Soon He stoped in front of a big tree. I dont know why but I new he was looking at a deer. I snuck a couple of paces forward and sure enough there was a spiker. I slipped off the safety and whacked him in the shoulder.

The deer dropped on the spot.
Sweet.
Job done. I think that Jed has turned a corner in his hunting. I just need to keep getting him out there.

good shit man...... I have similar issues with Meg...untill we get our "groove on" learn to trust the dog...always investigate what it wants to show you ALWAYS if its a non target species, tell dog so and move on,when Meg gets excited and wants to get too far ahead I make her get in behind....neither of us like that, she settles quick smartly,a quiet stop whistle is great too, stop dog BEFORE it gets too far out then SLOWLY stalk up to dog before moving it on with you behind it,Meg has learnt to slow down for the silly old fart following her, even goes into super slow mode if going is crappy, the excited whine/growl or worst of all bark is an ongoing issue, must be plurry frustrating for dog to know deer is there or be able to see them when we cant, keep calm and trust dog.
nothing more enjoyable than when it all comes together.
enjoy the venison and dont forget.TRUST THE DOG.
