I’ve just got back from a Hutt Valley Deerstalkers trip into the Ruahines, the purpose of the trip was to show that recreational hunters can contribute to game management in high population areas. Me and my mate saw over 50 deer in the time we were in the hills, we managed to knock ten over and do our bit for game management.

Thank you for the info, yeah you are right i would be driving past a lot of deer, i can fill my freezer and have been from quite a few spots within 1.5-2.5hr of Hamilton, so me going all the way to thw Ruahines will only really be if i happen to be down there for work or if i wanna do a trip just to at least say that i have been in the ruahines.Quote:

That mid Ruahines countryside is where shoot to waste should be considered. Worst I had was a 400m shot took half an hour to get to. Would be lovely to be able to fly into some of the more remote bits in there. But as others have said, any 2-3 hour walk in from any roadend in the Ruahines will have you in the thick of it:D
Good result chaps - walking will also result in the same carnage :)
PS, the Lake Sumner RHA has the same problem, needs a lot of hinds removed. Lots of them

Have been for a couple of walks in the ruahines . Recently have walked down the Roki track and hidden out in the river bed edges waiting for the deer to come out.
Havent seen anything yet but still enjoying the exercise and the anticipation of "one day seeing one".
Will venture into another spot next time as not having much luck along the roki track and that river bed.
You’re in the right area. Climb higher and look for slips to glass. We’ve had a good level of success in the southern Ruahines with that method. I also use google maps to identify the slips first.Quote:
