Last hunt for 2021

I had my gear packed on Xmas day and as soon as the chores were done Boxing Day I was off. The wx was looking inclement so I took the tent as well as the fly. I hunted my way in fruitlessly in the evening. The wind seemed to be playing follow the hunter. I arrived at my campsite around 8pm and got the fly and tent up just as the rain started. Thought I’d go check out a spot close to camp as the days are pretty long here at present.
As soon as I poked my head out of the bush I spotted a stag feeding. 341 yds. Too far in the wind and rain. In fading light I cut back through the bush and looped around on him. I got to within 50yds and put a big hole in his shoulder. Bugger me if he didn’t leap in the air and jump in the stream too !

Ruby showed me the way home in the dark. I love sleeping in the bush. 9:30 am we awoke on the 27th. A couple of cups of coffee and a long breakfast later we set off to explore some new country and set up another camp a couple of hour’s away. We probably seen 30’deer all up yesterday. Had a cool encounter with a hind and fawn. The pics were just taken off the phone. I’m not sure if I’m getting soft Or maturing but they were safe from us.

I had a good talk with her and asked her to take better care of her offspring. Go and get a lotto ticket mate.

As we hunted back to camp in the late evening we shot a yearling just cos it looked tasty. Another good sleep last night. All the meat was boned out this morning. Because of my late starts I had a 5 hour trudge with a very heavy pack through the heat of the day. Nevermind roll on 22!!!

Sounds like a bit of a trek, with those numbers around it might pay to shoot a few more next time, before they’re all culled. :-)

Yeah @craigc I did the km’s. Probably close to a 30km round trip. I hear you re numbers. Will go for a cull once the fawns are a bit older. Or start taking back straps only.

Better yet take out someone who's never been hunting before. Tell them they can keep whatever they carry whether they shoot it or you do the business!

@Nathan F Good one mate & l agree l have found the more time you spend hunting various species of Game animals & learning their habits to increase your hunting success ,the more empathy you have for them . I to find myself giving non target game on a hunt a talking to if they have put themselves in a too easy to be taken position, the ones l pass over will often flee the encounter with a crazy humans warning of being more careful next time ringing in their ears & not a gun shot.
@Nathan F Talking of ringing in the ears ,were your ears burning this morning ? I blamed you for this wet retrieve, l could have done with out this morning on a Jet Boat hunt l did with the Missus, l put her on to this one on a productive river flat we hunt often when we get the boats out for a run & she dropped it at 110mtrs with her 270 ,after a bit of belly stalking through the low bush to get a clear shot ,she heart shot it & the zombie run put it in the river .

From now on l am going to refer to these wet retrieves as " Doing a Nath" ,might have to start carrying the snorkeling gear if l am going to follow your hunting advice . :wtfsmilie::P:thumbsup:

Lol classic. Yeah I don’t know what it is. I’ve had 4 heart shot deer lately try and cross streams and rivers dead on their feet. Their legs stop working usually about half way. My last stag was a ripper he was feeding on a terrace and I shot from 50 m inside the bush which was very dark. Lost him in the recoil and smoke. Knew I’d got him when an almighty splash went up in the air from the general direction of the river

Last guy I took out was physically broken. I tricked him by saying I will take all the gear and the rifle - you take the meat. 6 hours later ������
