I have read cotton buds soked in vasaline is very good for fire lighting , could any one confirm this ?
A bit of tube works about the best.
Both those work well.
I've just done firewood for the year and cut up a lot of old man pine. It is so full of resin that i'm going to cut some of it up into small bits and take that with me too as an extra fire starter.
you basically need two things - a spark or flame, and initial material. messing with matches in an emergency is a waste of time.
to get a spark, your best option is one of the flints or striker type starters
for material, small patches of bicycle inner tube burn forever, and even when wet.
steelwool is another good option as well as tampons
i carry a small piece of wax candle as well, shaved square so it fits into a smaller space. you can rub the wax on logs or other stuff to make them burn hotter or start burning easier.
That's mental. I'm glad you're all good.

I'm a fan of the bit of candle and inner tube trick. Usually use a lighter to start the fire, and have a spare in the medical kit.
On the bright side, ... I suppose things can only get better.
Good yarn 6MMBR least you and Finn are alright
Lotto ticket this weekend, that's a fairly sickening read, you was lucky
