    Hi GPM
We met on the track from Lakes carpark to Kiwi Saddle in September, happy new year to you. This link ( MapsPast | Current and historical topographic maps (topomaps) of New Zealand ) will take you to a great mapping site with all the old NZ topo maps on it. They will give you an idea of the general location of the old huts that were there. I stayed in the Kaweka Hut about a month before it burn't down and are hoping to get back there for a nosey soon. Regards Ruger7mm

Many thanks for that. I had a quick browse and it will be really handy. I have a lot of old maps but it is much easier to pull them up on the screen rather than rummaging through a map drawer. Hot .284 barrels to you as well for the new year.
    Regards GPM

    Greetings All,
You won't find a hut of this name on the Kaweka maps. GPM relaxing on the verandah about 20 years ago. Choppered in and walked out via Ballard and Makino Huts.

How far in to the bush was that hut at wairere? I found a pile of old pots and pans and shit in an area that could've been an old hut site, nice and flat, open bush but not on a clearing

Kauritatahi is still standing I walked there via thompsons track early last year, nice little hut with a good view but to small for 3 trampers and 2 hunters

Aah, VT, home away from home.
I remember when there used to be a big rubbish pit dug south of the hut.
Before the pack it in, pack it out days.
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

A chocolate fish is in the mail. Venison Top Hut or Tira Lodge on the map but Kelvinator Lodge is apt if you have been their in the winter. Lots and lots of deer bones in the gulley heads on the Ngaruroro side, must have been a hot spot.

First swung by there in 1981 (I think) and did so sporadically for some years after that. What I recall was how it would go from appearing buggered to almost restored and so on over ~ 10 years

That will be the 'new' Kaurititahi, the old one burnt down, it looked out over the BoP.

Just beyond where you entered the bush at the top of Thompsons is a clearing, there used to be a hut at the top of it used by batten splitters and shepherds back when the western side of the Kaimai's was grazed.
