    Old pics-dog-boredom

This was a few years ago. (2017) but was a great find by Tilly.

I shot a Fallow over on the middle right hand clearing and it bolted off to the right into the bush. Shot was maybe 300 yards with my 7-08. It was a bit windy and I probably didn't allow for that. My bad.

When I got over there, there was no blood and no sign of the deer. I poked around in the bush and couldn't find anything but Tilly was interested in something in the creek down below me, so I sent her off.

After a couple of minutes she gave a few yips like she had found it, then stopped. This carried on for about 5 mins on and off and was getting further away until I couldn't hear her. I was following around the face.

Eventually she seemed to have caught it and I could hear the odd growl and scuffing down below me so I cut down to the creek. This is what I found (pics). She had tracked it for about a kilometre, and had obviously tried to stop it going by the bites on its bum. I was very pleased with her, but not so pleased with my shooting. Shows the value of a good dog. Her and I have shot 163 deer together now.

A wonderful pic. The sort of the pic we used to see in the old Field & Stream magazines.

The value of a good dog. Your right about that, my boy Sig has found a lot of runners from not so good shot placement and loves deer pointing on deer and finding deer shot at longer ranges that he hasn’t seen.
Because he’s so keen I hunt and poak as many deer at him, more than I would normally without a dog. I also pull him off a lot of animals in area’s I don’t or can’t get into myself without IDENTIFYING an animal. I’m looking at getting another dog in two years time to retire him and pretty keen on a dog like yours. The short hair Vizsla is a soft dog and doesn’t like the cold.

from 2001, up to her guts in mud retrieving ducks from the rice grass on the Northern Wairoa river.
This old girl is long gone, now sitting in a nice wooden box on the hearth alongside a few of her mates.
