Me and the kids have done a lot of possum/rabbit/hare missions over the years but the youngest (11) really wants to get into hunting bigger stuff.
I've got .243 and have bowled the odd goat and deer, but only the stupid ones as I don't really know what I'm doing when it comes to getting onto bigger game.
A compounding issue is that I snapped a tendon in my left leg at the beginning of the year which means I can't walk to well, do have been trying to find places to take him where I didn't have to walk huge distances.
Anyway, Mt Duppa outside Nelson looked like an option. We drove out there mid afternoon hoping to be in a good spot by dusk.
Saw a mob of goats beside the forestry road not much before the carpark which was a good sign.
We snuck up the track through some nice promising bush.
Some quartz crystals were found in the limestone outcrops.
And we saw some Poweliphanta shells.
We got to the summit just on dusk, for a pretty good sunset.
We found our way back down by head torch without to much trouble. No animals were seen anywhere on DOC land.
On the drive out through the forestry we saw a pig, 2 hare and a possum on the road. 路
The youngest loved it and wants try going and have a look out from Inwood Lookout next.
