Hate it when that happens. Dog does help but nothing is fool proof.

Leave someone where you shot from and one person looks for downed animal. We’ve all lost animals.

This, if I've shot across a gut, then I get ole mate to wait on this side whilst I make my way over to where the animal was when I shot it. I've noted that I invariably head higher than I need to, so it's handy to have someone on the radio talk you into position

And put a bit of flagging tape where you shot from, two bits lined up if possible

Isn't there a model of GPS where you can laser point at a spot and it will drop a tag on that spot and you can navigate to it?

Sight and go feature on most garmins, point in direction, enter range, walk to way point, have found it to work well

Have done similar with NZtopo on my phone, rangefinder for distance then just drag a waypoint in the right direction and save it as "fresh veni"

I suppose the cheap dirty version of that is to take a compass bearing as Micky suggests then range to where the shot was and follow that bearing, intermittently ranging back to where you thoughtfully hung toiletpaper in the tree until you get to the correct distance and voila, you're there

That'd be fine if you could walk in a more or less straight line from shooting position to shot position BUT sometimes the only way to the other side is to walk the contour, probably there's a way to use a compass to triangulate that but sadly my compass skill set isn't what it should be....
