    Schools Out

My eldest daughter is 7 and is off for Summer holidays from the grind that is Primary School.
At the suggestion that she would like to go hunting with her dad one day we were packed up and out the door before the last word had struck the floor.
The weather has been rather pleasant of late and today being a cooler day with a brief patch of rain yesterday had me itching to look out onto some local Kaweka country. This was to be our first official hunting trip so I figured it had better not be too tough or she could well never want to go again. After a short push up a popular access we decided to stop and glass the surrounding country.

The first Sika was not too long to appear but @ 870m over the river it was a definite pass.

Another 5 minutes up the track and the opposite side of the ridge yielded better results

Over the next hour and a half the manuka conjured up another 2 japs and at under 350m were possible shots.

The difficulty was the retrieve, with patchy contorta and Manuka not to mention the best way would be to cut over the top to get across the short gully. Far from 1st time hunting fun. The decision was made to leave them be and take a few photos.
The hinds all looked in great nick but no fawns were seen over the day. Not surprising but Ive often seen fawns in tow during the day up here.
