Second 12 pointer for the year

The morning started off looking pretty amazing, I just crawled home now and the weather is starting to shit itself. I seem to be striking it lucky weather wise lately.

I went back to near enough the same area I shot a 10 and 12 pointer during the roar. I bush stalked a few creek beds with no luck so changed tactics to an area that catches the sun a bit more, even though there was a northerly blowing and being a fairly warm morning, all the tricks of bush hunting I have learnt over the years paid off. Sneaking through the thick stuff I was able to look ahead perhaps only 30m at times, but that was enough to get a good look for movement before slithering forward to the next clearing in the bush.
Every time I see the shape and colour of a deer in the bush I still get excited, this morning was no different. He had his head down facing away from me giving a difficult aim, he didn't stay like this for long though as he lifted his head turning slightly, his senses must have activated and gave him the chills that he was being watched.
Aiming at the usual spot I pulled back the hammer on the rifle and fired, the stag bolted downhill but didn't go far, another clean shot through the vitals had him dead on his feet.
I was quite pleased to see he was a 12, slightly heavier than the 12 I shot in the roar, still the bez tines are a bit ratty. Must be something with the blood line maybe.

You shoot him with a hammered lever or single shot?

I really like that head for it's uniqueness. Not a classic big head but a very unusual structure makes it well worth keeping.

Sure was I was just going for a meat hunt, the first thing I see dies and this fella was in the wrong place at the wrong time. (not for me though)

A 12 is a 12 what ever way you look at it so you can sure be happy with that, also the memories of the stalk to finally taking the shot , excellent result.

what load you using bud???? great stag with plenty of character.

Just factory Winchester X ammo 7mm-08. It hits hard and seems to put them down.

hot shit bud....love it in the .308 for bush work......big soft heavy loads pretty darn hard to beat.... currently loading 180grn round nose hornady to try to duplicate the same results,cant complain . keep up the great work. saw hammer spurs on trademe last night for first time in ages,you would think they would be in every H&F store etc with all the hammer guns out there.
