Thread: Social club trip with VC

VC Picked me up from Kiwi Gregs Friday morning and after a bit of waiting around for his work mates we were off on a road trip to Kiakoura.
It was a nice but slow senic drive in the underpowered Safari, I especially enjoyed the Kiakoura coast what an awesome place.
It was raining as we arrived at base but with still enough time for an evening hunt everyone was keen to get out for a walk.
VC and I and the big bald headed chicken fu&%$r headed out one end of the property,while Knobs and Captain Happy went the other direction.

We held back from the BBHCF a hundred yards or so to give him the best chance of scoring a deer with his bow and soon enough we saw him come back to full draw but he clean missed! he headed up the ridge from there and we carryed on around to get out of his way.
It wasnt long before VC spotted a hind,yearling and spiker hungrily gutsing down grass in a gut, with the help of my cammo covering the white beacons of his bald spots we stalked down to within 25y of them and I thought I was going to see VCs 303smle in action but he reckoned we were still to close to the BBHCF and the noise of a shot could bugger his stalk so we just videoed them and carried on.

On we went to get away out of earshot and we spyed a couple more deer and a stalk was planned,Gaining some hight to get the wind right we closed in on the gully and as we peeked in we discovered they had fed down onto the track
VC stalked in and I reminded him to keep the wind on our side and use the available cover but i reckon he probably had it sorted anyway
Finally the 303 barked and the hind dropped on the spot on the side of the track....then kicked twice and slid 100m straight down off the side,I couldn't help but laugh to myself ,VCs easy deer on the track was now a short but bloody steep slippery carry and I wasn't helping him

Back on the track we walked quick smart back to the hut in the freezing rain and wind to get a 4wheeler, VCs a bit of a mad bugger on the 4wheeler in the dark but i had to laugh when I looked down and snot was streaming out of his nose but because his face was frozen he didn't even notice until it was getting in his mouth

Knobs had head shot a nice yearling with VCs sako and Captan Happy had head shot one too

Everyone had a big cooked feed and a few beers and hit the sack.
Sat morning revealed a fresh dump of snow down to the tree line.

VC and I and Knobs headed off together, there was a cold barstard wind this morning and it showed in the lack of animals out in the open,VC headed straight up a mint gully with the wind right up his arse I thought this guy was a hunter lol but i soon figuered out his plan to double back along a ridge into the wind.

We stopped and watched in the gully for a couple of mins to see what our scent would flush out the top.



Then some dozy goats appeared and Knobs lined up a eater but missed so VC knocked one over.





It was gutted and dragged down to the track then,we were back up the gully to hunt down the ridge,we spotted a big black billy with ok horns. I was expecting him to shoot it but VC reckoned the horns are too tough and dont taste any good so we carefully stalked past it and on down the ridge.





Getting on a bit further I thought there was bugger all chance of a deer out in this wind but we found some.

Those deer and goats were pretty acheivable but the day was young so we carried on to see what else we could find,the binos did most of the walking and we spotted 10 deer scattered over clearings on a manuka choked ridge,due to the wind we had to head up an ajacent ridge and find a clear spot to shoot accross.





It was tricky to find a spot to get a clear shot obove the manuka and VC was Packing anything he could find under the rifle to get some hight but I escaped the indignity of being used
Now with the clearings ranging 240-420y it was a matter of waiting for one to feed into veiw again and a lull in the wind for the 223,we didnt have to wait long and a hind and yearling fed up into veiw and clear shot teritory 246y distant and 18deg up, the wind lulled then the 223 spoke.









Back at the hut Captin happy had missed one and BBHCF had loosed another arrow to no avail.
quite a few beers and rums were consumed that night and a fair bit of shit slung but none in my direction so i was happy.
Hunday morning BBHCF was sent out with VCs Sako while VC an me stayed round camp with the binos and radio.
eventually he got one and we wont go into details but lets just say the mag was empty

VC not being able to leave a top of the line hat like me behind left the next best thing for the collection in the rafters.
