Some nelson venison

The DOC blocks i hunt around here havnt heard any roaring at all. Been out at least four good hunts and all thats answered my roars are goats
Spooked a hind from a few yards on one hunt otherwise been pretty quiet apart from sunday and ran into a mob of 30plus goats and with my four rounds managed to shoot 3 of them Wink.
Dragging one of the goats down the hill i fell and stuffed my leg. Thought it was going to be the end of the roar for me as the next two days there was no way i was going bush

Lucky, after a couple days rest, painkillers and a knee support the leg was good enough to stagger along for a hunt today

Got up early and headed of to a spot which always holds a stag.
On the way there a spiker runs across the road right in front of me, sign of things too come maybe.

Someone had been there on the weekend from the boot prints but i saw fresh deer marks as well so wasnt feeling like i was wasting my time .
Again, no roaring and the wind was being a pain in the arse.
Dosed with painkillers and the knee support the leg wasnt feeling too bad but thought a earlier day out wouldnt be bad thing.

Took the 308 REM today as the trusty 243 was out due to lost of turrent cap

Didnt take too long and came across fresh sign and lots of it .
Seems there were a few deer around and i was sure i see one at same stage

The place and spur where i needed to climb was a wee way in and the wind was all wrong after a change of wind direction.
Darn wind but there was plenty of sign but no roaring so i continued the long way to get the wind right and hunt some very thick bush to the top of the spur.
eading uphill in scrub you could only see 20 yards in front of you the leg started to let me know it was there Sad but continue i go.

Suddenly 25 yards away a deer appears above me feeding heading right and dosent know im there.
Looks like a lone hind and as the winds a pain decision time.

Do i leave it and continue for a stag or do i cut my loses with the crappy wind, no roaring and a dodgy leg and come home with some venison and head back in another couple of days for a stag?

Decided venison would do nicly and lined her up just as she winded me.

Boom and a 165gr sst on its way.
The deer took off and headed into the thick crap. No blood where i shot and no blood along the game trail where she went.
After travelling 40 yards still no sign and had doubts i even hit it .
Suddenly from above me theres a crash and rolling down to 15 yards from me is the hind stone dead Smiley Smiley

he angle of the shot wasnt great so no wonder it got 40 yards but its down and i take my time and cool off the meat and make my way back to the car.



On the way out ran into a goat so i pop that off and arrive back at the car not too worst for wear with fresh venison and a plan to come back in the next few days and hunt only for the stag that im sure is there Smiley

Nice work, still early enough for them to roar & some years in some places they might not.
