Taking the 6mm-204 & Veitnamcam for a stroll.

I have been trying to get some more pork for a little while now, it has been fairly dry where I hunt & there seems to be very little sign around.
They are fairly hard to get sitting at home so I txted Cam to see if he wanted to go for a walk again last night.
I decided to put a VX3 4.5-14 x 40 CDS on the T3 6-204 to see how the 87 SP Hornadys go on game at a leisurely 3050fps & it's always nice to blood a new rifle.

The weather was looking okayish with only a 98% chance of fog :P with a nice bit of moonlight to walk in :)

We managed to find a Boar about 65 lbs looking over his shoulder at us, arse on, a shot I have had plenty of trouble with over the years :oh noes:

He was about 70m away & fell over at the crack of the 6mm & the smack of the 87sp hitting him, we were finally on the board :cool:

About bloody time & the 6mm was no longer a virgin :)

We had a look at another spot but only found plenty of old rooting & wisps of the dreaded fog :(
We could see plenty more fog around the corner where we were going next which wasn't a particularly good sign.
When we got there is was pretty patchy but decided on a game plan & started up the hill.
It is a reasonably steep little pinch up there & after a few stops we got to the fench line track at the top.
We had a look around & a wee rest so I could stop puffing so much ;)
We both heard some sticks cracking up to our left & thought it was a little noisy for a possum so we headed over there in the fog.
Cam had the light on & we finally made out a Boar through the fog, facing towards us.
I didn't need telling twice & at around 50metres the 6mm had it's second victim rolling down the hill to a free hand shot, I'm really starting to like this little rifle :cool:

I bowled him down the hill towards the ute & we continued on.
The fog was coming & going, making a nuisance of itself, not uncommon for this time of the year in the Rai Valley.... :XD:
We continued on in the fog until we got to another track & heard some pigs up a gully in the scrub, we waited for a while listening to them hopeing they would come down into the paddock but it was not to be.
The fog was getting thicker & thicker so we turned around to go & pick up the Boar & drag him the 100metres or so down to the ute :thumbsup:
Then it was a nice drive home to drop the pigs off.

I must get going now & skin them, looking forward to seeing the damage those 87s made :)

Good stuff men! Do the pigs not really give a shit with you bashing around on their territory or do you have to be ninja?

Just reasonably quiet Dougie, while fog can be an arse for lamping(cant see) It seems to lull all the nocturnal wild animals into a false sense of security. and if you see something its close:thumbsup:

I have shot plenty sneaking around in the bush.
They are noisey buggers and fairly easy to sneak up on, I think they think the noise you make is one of their mates.
The wind direction is everything !!!!
Their sense of smell has to be seen to be believed, even with their noses deep in the ground they can smell you if the wind changes even for a split second.
They are hard to see in the bush being so close to the ground, unlike a Deer.
I can't be bothered chasing them with dogs either, call me soft if you like, but I don't like what the pigs do to the dogs & what the dogs do to the pigs.
Even with my biggest cannon I will get more meat off a pig compared to most of the ones I see at the Butchers.
They are quite hard to see in the light until you get used to looking for them, the black/white/ginger ones are very difficult to see from a distance especially if they are muddy.

Sounds really cool, Greg! I would imagine they are pretty good cammo but from the pig rooting I have seen in the south island I can imagine they can make a hell of a noise! Do you take them to your local butcher or just chop them up yourself for roasts for another day?

I cut up the sub 40-50lbers for roasts, the bigger ones get processed.
I have shot so many over the years & can't be bothered roasting crappy ones, sausages, salamis, patties etc are a far better idea for the ones I get, in the areas I get them from around here.
This time of year nearly every old ute has a dog box on & even a lot of the flash ones as well.
The pigs around here get hell from the dog chasers, GPS units haven't made the pigs lot any easier.

Someone once asked the old man why he got a Colorado instead of a sheep shagger......... he replied "because I haven't got a alloy dog box" I pissed my self:D (its a Nelson joke)

I love stalking pigs good fun. Ive been ridiculisly close in some mobs and walked right between them. Once I hadnt sighted my rifle in properly and missed with my last 2 bullets at around 30meters lol and the pigs just carried on eating/rooting i tried getting as close as I could got about 10 meters away from a 100lb sow and a couple of 20 lber tag alongs to my suprise the just kept that distance not taking flight walked around with them for about ten minutes was a crack up.

A 204 Ruger case opened out to 6mm.

I also do a 22-204 which has a little more performance than a 223AI without the traditional AI issues.

the pigs down my way live in the open tussock. so usually pretty easy to find with shots from 100 to 500m can be good fun lying on are hill watching them

Nice work guys, a couple of really good eaters there.

I must admit I do enjoy pig hunting with dogs, it adds another dimension to the hunt. Also the satisfaction of getting a dog going from scratch is quite an achievement as not many dogs actually have it in them to become a top hunter (a bit like people actually).

The sound of dogs bailing a pig in the distance is like injecting adrenaline straight into my veins...
