Toby's shotgun bags a few turkeys for Christmas

For the last 2 years I've been looking after the 870. Never really having a place to shoot it other than at the range.

I have been lucky enough to have a goat spot and a turkey spot on the same road.

Today I went out for a quick walk for some Christmas turkey.

I drove to the end of the farmers land in my wagon. Got all my gear on, loaded up some lead falcon no.3's and off I went!

As I was putting the electronic ear muffs on my neck I noticed this black thing moving near the water trough. Thought I would have a better look at it and blimey. A family of 4 turkeys was crapping in the cattle water!

Sneaked through the thigh high grass and popped my head up. Bam, all of a sudden they were 20 paces away.

Whacked the muffs on and shouldered the ranger. One was unlucky enough to have popped its head out of the grass and got well ventilated.

Quick as a flash another tried to leg it in the air. A quick pump and a tiny bit of leading and it went down as gracefully as a turkey can.

Sadly the few months old chicks must have gotten a stray pellet and needed finishing off.

I plucked the feathers, breasted and legged them pretty easily.



Yes the shotgun had an empty 5 round tube mag. And the bolt was back and safety on.

I thort the deal on knocking turkeys off was only in the months without an "r" in them...I guess we will all know in a few days.

No but I upset the people at Kelly Tarltons Aquarium last week when they were showing off a Green Turtle they had rescued and I told them I had eaten a lot of Turtle when I was posted in Singapore in the early seventies.

My old chinese flatmate said chicken feet were meh, she much preferred goose and duck fett as they were "chewier" . She was fucking good value

Can't say that I have eaten them. How ever, I now have a new goal...... I do like chicken feet, steamed with chilli, so turkey can't be that different??

I didn't want to annoy the farmer by using the fence posts as a cutting board for the bush knife. I have a cleaver that will deal with the feet pronto

Breast meat is so tender. Looks like its been corn fed.

They've been living in the tall grass that's gone to seed. It's like a grain almost.

Going to be awesome!


Probably gonna cook the breasts in chermoula seasoning.

And have some grilled brie and Cranberry sauce on the side.

Legs may be done in the oven with a butter sauce as a baste

Should be fine since we're now in Decemba. And what on earth are you doing still being up at this time of night?

Good to see the old Tobemeister shottie is still seeing some action.

Well @Rushy mate,whilst living in Ho Chi Minh city for three years,you couldn’t escape the smell or cooking of bird feet....the buggers love them,not sure where the rest of the bird was but the side alleys were full of habatchi-cooking mothers ,cooking feet........only time I could eat them was with a full belly of Tiger piss,....and the thought of eating chippies.......the farts were horrendous!!!

Don't know how many wild turkeys you have eaten, but bear in mind the legs are ridiculously tendinous. Serving a leg up to grandma on Christmas day would be amusing to say the least! We had some turkey recently (although shot at the beginning September). Smoked/barbecued and it was delicious!

It was heaps of fun! They're not shot at very much so not too hard but the whole shooting on the wing was new.

Spooked one at the top of the waiorongomai Valley. But nothing else seen.

Bugger all I'm afraid.

I have wood smoked the legs and finished in the oven. Tastes fine. But I think I over cooked a little. Not the most tender.
